MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women's basketball team's second half rally came up short , as the Wildcats fell to Indiana State, 77-73, in their season opener on Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.

K-State was led by seniors Ashley Sweat and Kari Kincaid, who both scored 16 points. Kincaid was 3-of-4 from long distance and a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in the second half.  Sweat also posted the high in rebounds with eight, along with sophomore Jalana Childs.

Kelsey Luna paced three players in double figures for Indiana State with a career-best 37 points on the day.  She went 15-of-21 from the field, including 2-of-5 from long range, in 38 minutes.

Freshman guard Brittany Chambers became the first freshman to start for the Wildcats in a season opener since Ashley Sweat did on Nov. 10, 2006. But freshman Taelor Karr had the biggest day of any of the freshmen as she scored nine points in her K-State debut.

K-State struggled in the first half scoring only 21 points and entered the locker room down 35-21 to the Sycamores. Indiana State senior Kelsey Luna led all scorers in the first half with 15 points followed by Shalin Spani of K-State with 11 points.

The Wildcats opened the second half with a 3-point basket from Spani but the Sycamores answered with a three pointer of their own on the very next possession. Luna continued to drive the Indiana State attack in the second half, scoring 22 of her game-high 37 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

K-State outscored the Sycamore 19-13 in the last five minutes of the game with two 3-pointers by Kincaid. The Wildcats tried to claw their way to a lead but Indiana State was 9-of-12 from the free throw line in the last five minutes to seal the victory.

The Wildcats lace it up next against Arkansas State in Bramlage Coliseum on Monday at 7 p.m.
