BYU (3-1) returns to Provo for Friday's contest following a three-game road trip. The Cougars concluded the trek with a 72-39 win over Southern Utah on Tuesday night. BYU was able to empty the bench against the Thunderbirds, as 14 players saw action and no one played more than 22 minutes.
The Cougars are led by ninth-year head coach Jeff Judkins. The 1978 graduate of Utah owns a 160-90 (.640) record during his tenure with the Cougars. Judkins has guided BYU to five postseason appearances, including four NCAA Tournament appearances.
On the court, BYU is led by junior guard Mindy Nielson and junior forward Coriann Wood. Nielson leads the Cougars with a scoring average of 11.0 per contest. Nielson has scored in double figures in three of the four contests this season.
Wood is BYU's top reserve averaging 9.5 points per game and leads the Cougars in rebounds at 6.5 per game. Against Southern Utah, Wood tallied a team-high 12 points and added seven rebounds to her final stat line. |
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State will look to win its first road game of the season, as the Wildcats visit BYU on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (CT). This will be K-State's first visit to Provo, Utah and just the second meeting in the series with the Cougars. This will be K-State's first trip to the state of Utah since 1998.

The Wildcats dropped the opening game of its current three-game road trip, a 63-54 decision at Creighton on Nov. 23. K-State held the advantage in field goal percentage (.438 to .392) and on the boards (34 to 33), but the Bluejays were able to capitalize on its opportunities at the free throw line by going 15-of-22 to K-State's 4-of-12.
K-State was led by freshman guard Brittany Chambers with 14 points and senior guard Kari Kincaid with 13 points. The pair was 6-of-7 from beyond the arc, as Chambers was 4-of-4. This was the second time this season Chambers has made four 3-point field goals in a game. Kincaid also led the Wildcats in assists with five.
The third Wildcat to reach double figures on Monday night was freshman guard Taelor Karr with a career-high 11 points and five rebounds.
For the season, senior forward Ashley Sweat leads the Wildcats with 16.7 points per game and 8.5 rebounds. Joining Sweat with a double figure scoring average is Kincaid at 13.3 and Chambers at 10.3 per game. Kincaid also leads the team in assists with 14 (3.5 apg).

Patterson in 14th Season at K-State Deb Patterson, the all-time winningest women's basketball coach and the longest tenured women's basketball coach in Kansas State history, has a career record of 266-149 (.641) and a record of 114-94 (.548) in the Big 12, including Big 12 regular season titles during the 2003-04 and 2007-08 seasons.
Following the 2007-08 season, Patterson was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year by the league's coaches and a number of media outlets. She also garnered national consideration, finishing as the Russell Athletic/WBCA Region V Coach of the Year and a finalist for the WBCA and Associated Press National Coach of the Year honors.
Patterson has steered the Wildcats to eight consecutive postseason appearances, including a trip to the NCAA Mideast Regional Semifinals in 2002, the 2006 WNIT Postseason crown and a second round trip during the 2008 NCAA Tournament. She is the only current head coach at K-State to guide his/her team to eight straight postseason appearances.
While guiding the Wildcats to eight straight postseason appearances, Patterson has defended the floor in Bramlage Coliseum successfully during this time, posting a 152-42 (.784) record at home including an 81-8 (.910) record against non-conference opponents.
Wildcats on the Road; Set Record For Road Wins K-State has a 225-223 (.502) record in road games during the program's 42-year history. During the 21st century, K-State owns a 65-43 (.602) mark in road contests and are 82-77 (.516) during Deb Patterson's 14 seasons on the K-State bench.
K-State notched a 10-5 (.667) record on the road last season to break the previous school record of nine (1982-83 and 2001-02). Dating back to the 2007-08 season, the Wildcats have won 18 of their last 24 away contests.
Cats Protect the House Against Non-Con Foes Entering the 22nd season of action inside Bramlage Coliseum, Kansas State has protected its home floor with determination against non-conference foes with a record of 118-21 (.849) record.
In the Deb Patterson era, the Wildcats have been even better with a record of 81-8 (.910).
Wildcats in the Purple Palace K-State has enjoyed the friendly confines of Bramlage Coliseum entering its 22nd season of existence with a record of 222-81 (.733). During the last 10 seasons, K-State is 123-32 (.794) in Bramlage Coliseum including a 13-1 record in 2008-09. In Big 12 home contests, the Wildcats are 70-34 (.673).
Remember, Remember the Month of November Entering the 42nd year of women's basketball at K-State, the Wildcats have accumulated a record of 95-39 (.709) in the month of November. In the Patterson era, the Wildcats are 46-19 (.708) in the 11th-month.
Roster Size Does Not Determine Win Total Kansas State will enter the 2009-10 season with 10 players on its roster (two seniors). This is the fourth time since the 1979-80 season that K-State will enter a season with 10 or fewer players on the roster. In the previous three seasons, K-State reached the postseason, including two NCAA Tournament appearances.
This is the smallest roster for the Wildcats since the 2006-07 season, when K-State had 10 players on the roster.
The smallest roster for the Wildcats was nine players in the 2002-03 season (zero seniors) and the 1996-97 season. The 2002-03 squad finished the season with a 29-5 record and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Halftime Lead = K-State 'W' Since 1999-00 Having the edge after the first 20 minutes of action has proven to be prophetic since the 1999-00 season, as K-State is 179-25 (.877) when leading at the break.
During the last two seasons, K-State owns a 47-4 (.922) record when leading with five minutes to play.
K-State Leads Big 12 in 1,000-Point Scorers In the 42nd season of women's basketball, K-State leads all Big 12 schools in 1,000-point scorers with 36. Senior forward Ashley Sweat is the only current Wildcat to surpass the 1,000-point barrier for her career with 1,358, which ranks ninth in school history.
Sweat is Offensive and Defensive Ashley Sweat has opened the 2009-10 season by improving her place on the K-State career scoring list with 67 points in the first four games (16.8 ppg). Sweat's career total now stands at 1,358 points to rank ninth in school history. Sweat, a Naismith Trophy and Wooden Award candidate, ranks seventh in the conference in points per game. She has scored in 103 career games, which is (every game of her career.
Against Washington State, Sweat carded a new career-high with 33 points on 12-of-19 shooting. The point total was the highest by a Wildcat since Kendra Wecker scored a school record 41 against Illinois State on Nov. 26, 2004. The 33-point effort marked the 74th game she has registered 10-or more points in a game and four games with 30 or more points.
The 33 points ranks tied for 11th in school history for a single game and was the highest by any player in the Big 12 this season. Sweat is Defensive To go along with her 16 points against Indiana State on Nov. 14, Sweat tallied a pair of blocked shots to move into 10th on K-State's career blocked shots list with 54. She is the seventh player in school history to record 1,000 points and 50 blocks in a career.
Sweat Climbs Career Rebounding List Ashley Sweat has improved her career rebounding total after the first four games of the season, as she has snared 34 rebounds (8.5 rpg) and ranks tied for seventh in the Big 12 in rebounds per game. Sweat's career rebounding total ranks tied for 27th in school history with 475 boards. Her 11 rebounds against Washington State tied her career-high of 11 at Colorado on Jan. 31, 2007. The double-double of 33 points and 11 rebounds by Sweat was the first of her career.
The product of McPherson, Kan., averaged a career-high 5.1 rebounds per contest and had 20 games with five or more rebounds in the 2008-09 season.
Last season, Sweat became the 25th player in school history to register 1,000 points (1,358) and 400 rebounds (475) in her career.
No Sweat for Sweat at the Foul Line Ashley Sweat has continued her strong performance from the charity stripe from a season ago, as she has started the 2009-10 season 27-of-33 (.818) from the foul line. She ranks 12th in the Big 12 in free throw percentage.
Last season, Sweat made and attempted a team-high 132-of-158 (.835). She was the first player to make 100 free throws in a season since Nicole Ohlde made 136 during the 2003-04 season. Her total of 132 made free throws this season ranks fourth in school history. Sweat finished the season ranked fourth in the Big 12 and 39th in the nation in free throw percentage this season. She also set the school record for consecutive free throws made with 33.
For her career, Sweat is 313-of-409 (.765) from the free throw line. Her career total of free throws made ranks sixth in school history. She is the seventh player in school history to make 300 or more free throws in her career.
She also ranks ninth in school history for free throw percentage and ninth for free throws attempted.
Kincaid Kaboom Kari Kincaid has provided the Wildcats with a consistent scoring option from the perimeter in the first four games, as she is averaging 13.3 points per game and ranks tied for 21st in the Big 12 in scoring. Her 16 points in the season-opener against Indiana State was her highest point total since Nov. 23, 2008 against UTSA when she tallied 17 points.
Against Washington State, Kincaid tied her career-high for assists with six and ranks 14th in the Big 12 with 3.5 assists per game.
The product of Andover, Kan., ranks ninth in school history for career 3-point field goals attempted with 320. She needs just four 3-point field goals made to tie for 10th in that category (108).
With the two makes from distance in three of the four games, Kincaid now has 31 career games with two or more made three-point field goals.
Last season, Kincaid was K-State's top 3-point shooter, as she made a career-high 59 and was ranked fifth in the Big 12 in three-point field goal percentage at .371.
Sweet Childs of Mine Sophomore Jalana Childs has provided K-State with an inside presence to match Ashley Sweat in the first four games of the season. Against the Sycamores in the opener, Childs carded a career-high-tying 14 points and also tied her career-best for field goals made with six. She also attempted a career-high 16 field goals and set a career-best for assists with four.
In the second game of the season against Arkansas State, Childs tallied 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and sent back the first two blocked shots of her career.
The double-digit scoring efforts were the fourth and fifth of her career.
For the season, Childs is averaging 7.8 points per game and is averaging 4.5 rebounds.
What Brown is Doing for Us Sophomore Branshea Brown has provided K-State with a post presence off the bench for the Wildcats in the first four games this season. Brown is averaging 2.8 points and 6.0 rebounds in 17.8 minutes per game.
At Creighton on Monday, Brown scored three points and pulled down a personal season-high seven rebounds. She also tied her career-high with two blocked shots.
Against Washington State, Brown registered four points, six rebounds and a blocked shot in a career-high 25 minutes of action.
In the second game of the season against Arkansas State, Brown hauled in seven rebounds and also scored four points.
Chambers Finds Bottom of Net Freshman Brittany Chambers registered her second career game with four connections from beyond the 3-point line, as she was 4-of-4 at Creighton on Nov. 23. Chambers finished with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and also carded two rebounds.
In her second career game, the product of Belle Plaine, Minn., recorded a career-high 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including a career-best 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. The four connections from deep were the most by a K-State freshman since Laurie Koehn was 5-of-10 in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament against Kent State on March 15, 2002. Her four makes were the most by a Wildcat since Kari Kincaid was 4-of-10 against Colorado in the first round of the 2009 Big 12 Tournament on March 12, 2009.
The 20 points by Chambers was the first time a K-State freshman has led the Wildcats in scoring since Jalana Childs carded 14 points against Oklahoma State on Feb. 15. It was the highest total single-game total by a freshman since Ashley Sweat tallied 31 points at Wyoming in the Postseason WNIT on March 28, 2007.
For the season, Chambers ranks tied for ninth in the Big 12 in 3-point field goal percentage at .600 (9-of-15) and is seventh in the Big 12 for 3-point field goals made at 2.3.
Karr Races to Career-Highs Freshman Taelor Karr improved her career-high for points and rebounds at Creighton on Nov. 23. Karr tallied 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. She also hauled in five rebounds and tallied two steals.
The 5-8 guard from Paola, Kan., recorded nine points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists against Indiana State in her career debut.
In her second career game against Arkansas State, Karr made her first career start and tallied seven points, two rebounds and a career-high five assists.
Shalin's Show Junior guard Shalin Spani provided a boost to the K-State offense during her first career start in the season-opener against Indiana State on Nov. 14.
The native of Lee's Summit, Mo., turned in a career-high 38 minutes of action which resulted in 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a career-high 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. She is tied for seventh in the Big 12 in 3-point field goals made per game at 2.0.
In the last two seasons, Spani has nine games with two or more connections from the 3-point line.
Last season, Spani's season was cut short due to a knee injury but she averaged 3.9 points in 25 games played.
