Matt Butler Game Highlight

A versatile and experienced linebacker who has played both inside and outside during his career... Expected to be a key contributor who will battle for starting duties... Enters preseason drills as the starter at weakside linebacker... Is a solid tackler and possesses a good nose for the ball.

 

2004 (Junior): Appeared in nine games with five starts... Pulled double duty during camp, drilling at both strong and middle linebacker... Settled in at the mike spot for the majority of the season, collecting 21 tackles, including 12 solo stops.... Had just two tackles in the season opener vs. Western Kentucky (9/4) before swarming back with a season-high eight total stops against Fresno State (9/11)... Credited with one solo and one assisted tackle against Louisiana-Lafayette (9/18)... Anchored middle of defense with three tackles at Texas A&M (10/2)... Recorded four tackles including three solo stops and one for a loss at Kansas (10/9)... Had one tackle at Missouri (11/6), Colorado (11/13) and in the season finale vs. Iowa State (11/20).

 

2003 (Sophomore): Opened the season as K-State’s starting middle linebacker... Saw action in 11 games with six starts... Ranked eighth on the team in total tackles with 53, including four for loss... His 31 assisted stops were sixth... Credited with one pass break-up... Collected three stops against Kansas (10/25)... Recorded a career-high 15 tackles against Marshall (9/20), including six solo stops... Registered his first sack against Massachusetts (9/13)... Earned six tackles against the Minutemen, including two for loss... Had eight total tackles against California (8/23), Troy State (8/30) and McNeese State (9/6).

 

2002 (Redshirt Freshman): Was one of only two rookies on the defensive two-deep... Started season with five tackles (3 solo) against Western Kentucky (8/31) and Louisiana-Monroe (4 solo)... Had one-half a tackle-for-loss (-1) vs. Louisiana-Monroe... Four tackles (2 solo) against Eastern Illinois (9/14)... Four stops (3 solo) in regular-season finale at Missouri (1/23)... Three tackles (2 solo) at Kansas (11/2)... Solo tackle vs. Iowa State (11/9) and an unassisted stop vs. Nebraska (11/16)... Played in all 13 games on special teams.

 

2001: Redshirt season.

 

Manhattan HS: Listed 56th among top 70 players in Midlands area by SuperPrep magazine... Kansas State Defensive Player of the Year as a senior... High school All-American by PrepStar... Member of Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital-Journal Super-11 teams... Kansas All-State selection as junior and senior... Three-time All-I-70 League selection... Had 162 tackles, including five sacks as senior... Finished junior year with 156 tackles and eight sacks... Had 110 tackles and two interceptions as a sophomore, including one pick returned for a touchdown... Started and lettered three seasons for Indians... High school coach was Butch Albright... Also played baseball, hitting .490 as junior.

 

Personal: Born Oct. 8, 1982, in Manhattan, Kan... Parents are Bill and Mary Butler... Father, Bill Butler, was running back for the Wildcats from 1969 through 1971 and played four seasons for the New Orleans Saints... Wears the same number (59) as fellow former Manhattan High product and 2003 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Gary Spani... Fifth-oldest of six children... Brother, Bill, played football at Coffeyville (Kan.) CC... A psychology major... Enjoys reading and lifting weights.
