Letter from A.D. John Currie -- August 31

Good morning Wildcat fans! Game Week is finally here and it's certainly a busy time around the department and university community as the students have returned for fall classes and we gear up for another exciting year. We have made tremendous progress as a department over the past year and look forward to continuing that trend in 2010-11 with your ongoing support and dedication.

Here's an update from inside K-State Athletics.

Volleyball Home Opener Tomorrow

Coach Fritz and the volleyball team open up the 2010 home season tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The 2010 team will be a fun one to watch grow as the Wildcats feature an exciting group of talented freshmen to complement returning veterans like JuliAnne Chisholm and Lauren Mathewson. Wednesday's match against South Dakota will begin at 7 p.m. and is your first chance to see our new enhanced seating systems and other improvements. The Varney's Invitational on Friday and Saturday features Loyola Marymount, Oral Roberts and Georgia Tech and provides the backdrop for our biggest volleyball alumni reunion ever. Last year we started a rotation in which we'll honor the alumni of two or three of our teams with a major reunion each year over a five year period. More than 50 Wildcat volleyball alums are expected - you can see them in Ahearn as well as on the field before the football game Saturday.

If you have a ticket to Saturday's football game, you can gain admission to Saturday's 7 p.m. volleyball match against Georgia Tech for just $3.

Family Reunion Update

We are expecting a great crowd on Saturday as Coach Snyder and our football team open the season against UCLA. It is sure to be a weekend buzzing with activities - in addition to the volleyball reunion, more than 100 riders will participate in Harley Day and ABC will be in town to televise the ballgame nation-wide. Less than 1,000 tickets remain, so call the ticket office today at 1-800-221-CATS, visit k-statesports.com or stop by the ticket office in Bramlage Coliseum to purchase tickets for as little as $35 or season tickets for all six exciting home contests. As one of our new customer service initiatives, the ticket office is now open from 8:30 a.m., until 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Student Combo Passes are Sold Out; Football Still Available

I want to salute our students for their tremendous support of the Wildcats! We had a great turnout at the welcome back pep rally August 22 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and we are pleased to report that both ICAT and GA combo passes for football and men's basketball have sold out. We have sold more than 6,600 student passes for football, but there still are football-only season tickets still available for student purchase for $150.

Preview the Cats on FSN

Be sure to check out the 2010 K-State Football Preview, produced by our Broadcasting and PowerCat Vision staff, on several stations this week. It'll give you a great preview of the team before you head to Manhattan for the UCLA game on Saturday. Air times and stations are listed below:

·         FSN - Aug. 31 (1 p.m. and 11 p.m.); Sept. 2 (4 p.m.)

·         Cox 22 - Sept. 1 (8 p.m.); Sept. 3 (6 p.m.)

·         Metro Sports - Aug. 31 (9 p.m.); Sept. 2 (9 p.m.); Sept. 3 (1 p.m.)

A Colleague Retires
Gerald Myers, longtime director of athletics at Texas Tech, announced last week that he will retire next May. I have really enjoyed getting to know Gerald this past year. Under his leadership, Texas Tech has done a tremendous job improving their facilities and program. In fact, Gerald has frequently shared with me how awed and impressed the Tech folks were by K-State's facilities and atmosphere when they came up to play the first Big 12 game against the Wildcats in 1996. They, along with others in our conference like Oklahoma State, Missouri and yes, even our rivals to the east down I-70 have all significantly upgraded their physical plants over the last several years. Thanks to the growth and passion I've seen in the Ahearn Fund and our fan base, I believe we can make a move to catch back up.

NCAA Certification Process

Periodically, all NCAA Division I athletic departments go through a process of certification with the NCAA in an effort to ensure integrity and commitment to student-athlete welfare in their operations. This is our third time going through the process, the last being 2002. A few weeks ago, President Schulz announced that the university has begun its nine-month, campus-wide self-study that will cover governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, gender/diversity and student-athlete well-being. Senior Vice Provost Ruth Dyer has been appointed chair of the steering committee and we appreciate her leadership during this important process. We are striving for the highest of the three possible outcomes of the process, "certified without conditions." The university has established a website at www.k-state.edu/ncaacert if you would like more information.

Annual Audits

As part of our commitment to fiscal integrity, we are currently going through our annual year-end financial audit. As we previously have announced, we achieved a balanced budget for FY10 and are proud of the progress we made this past year in restoring the integrity of our fiscal systems and accountability.
