Letter from A.D. John Currie - February 14

Good Morning Wildcat fans!

It's another Big Monday in Manhattan! We are looking forward to tonight's game with KU and know the nation will witness a loud and energetic Bramlage Coliseum tonight.

And while we are excited for tonight's Sunflower Showdown, Saturday's 3 p.m. matchup with Oklahoma will also be an exciting day with the annual K-State Proud student campaign adding to the activities surrounding the game. The family environment and spirit here at K-State is what makes our University and community so special and this event is a creative and unique way for K-Staters to showcase their pride and support.

In its fifth year, K-State Proud is designed for students to take part in their own philanthropic efforts in order to help fellow students. K-State Proud t-shirts can be purchased at the KSU Student Union or any GTM location with the proceeds going towards the campaign. Show your support of K-State students by wearing your K-State Proud shirt to the game on Saturday and creating a Blackout in Bramlage! If you would like more information on the event, visit www.k-stateproud.org.

And just in case you missed it, there was recently a terrific story in the Kansas City Star and Wichita Eagle on junior forward Victor Ojeleye - just another example of the tremendous student-athletes that we have here at K-State. Check out the story here.

Here are a few more updates from around the department as we continue to push through what has already been a very exciting start to the spring semester.

Basketball Recap
Coach Patterson and our women's squad are closing in on the program's 800th all-time win heading into action this week. Only 12 other schools in the history of women's basketball, including just one other Big 12 institution, have reached 800 wins. We encourage you to come out to Bramlage at 7 p.m., Wednesday as the team faces Colorado. Fans with a K-State men's basketball ticket from tonight's game with the Jayhawks can purchase a general admission ticket to the women's game for just $3 while other options in great locations are available for all fans beginning at just $8.

Tennis Off to Undefeated Start
Following two wins this weekend in Texas, the No. 52 women's tennis team has opened the season 6-0 for the first time since the 1989 campaign and has won the first six matches of a season for just the second time in school history. Coach Bietau's squad, which has just one senior on its roster, returned home from Denton, Texas, with two wins following a 6-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette and a 5-2 victory against host North Texas. Catch them in action Saturday and Sunday this weekend against Arkansas-Little Rock and Tulsa at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center. Both matches begin at 12 p.m.

Track Sees School Records Fall Again
The men's and women's track and field teams were split between two meets this past weekend as they continue to prepare for the Big 12 Indoor Championships later this month. Sophomore Erik Kynard again proved that he is among the world's top high jumpers as he broke the school record, which he set earlier this season, in Arkansas. Erik cleared 7-07.75 to soar past the other competitors. Mantas Silkauskas broke the school record in the 60 meter hurdles (7.74) for the second time this season, while Nina Kokot also set a new school mark in the long jump after a leap of 21-01.25.  The track and field squads host the KSU Open Friday at 2:30 p.m., at Ahearn Field House. Admission to the meet is free.

Baseball Coverage Expanded
The baseball team opens its season on the road Friday at Pacific. We recently announced that live audio of all baseball games will be available on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN, the K-State Sports Network or online at k-statesports.com. Also check out k-statesports.com for a full listing of live webcasts of baseball games as all non-televised home contests will be available for K-State All-Access subscribers. We are continuing to find ways to improve the exposure and distribution of all our events and these additional services are definitely a step in the right direction.

Other Upcoming Events
The men's golf team officially kicks off the spring season today and tomorrow in San Antonio, while the equestrian team hosts Texas A&M at home February 26. Be sure to check k-statesports.com for all of the latest information and results.

Finally, on behalf of K-State Athletics, I would like to congratulate Super Bowl Champion Jordy Nelson on a terrific performance in Super Bowl XLV as he set a new Packer postseason record with 140 receiving yards on nine catches and was on the receiving end of the game's first touchdown. Jordy is a true K-Stater and exemplifies everything that this University stands for and we are proud to call him one of our own!

That's it for today. We'll see you tonight and Go Cats!
