Letter from A.D. John Currie - August 15

Good morning Wildcats!

Today is an exciting day for Kansas State University and K-State Athletics.  For several months we have targeted today to share with you some ground-breaking news about a project that Athletics and University staff have been working on for the past year.

Obviously there have been a few other hot college news items over the last several days and we even briefly discussed possibly delaying our announcement in light of these distractions.

However, despite those distractions, our coaches and staff haven't slowed down one bit working every day toward our vision of a model intercollegiate athletics program with a world-class student-athlete experience - so, we are very proud to announce today the launch of our own exclusive, high-definition online video network known as K-StateHD.TV!
Not only will this project benefit our own student-athletes and K-State students, but it will provide a world-wide connection to Kansas State University and K-State Athletics and establish the university as an international leader in programming, accessibility and exposure as we move toward President Schulz's K-State 2025 vision of becoming a Top 50 public research institution in the country.

Our staff members have been working very hard over the past year to prepare for this launch, which will debut August 30 with our volleyball home opener against Creighton. We have a very distinctive and unique partnership with our university community and as we began putting together the pieces of this project, it became very clear that we had something special in the works that would provide us with an international platform to showcase our brand to our fans. We want to ensure that K-Staters anywhere in the world can watch the Wildcats!

The highlights of K-StateHD.TV include maximum national exposure for both the university and athletics programs through live athletic events, ALL PRODUCED IN HIGH DEFINITION, as well as classic athletic games and/or game replays, press conferences, original programming and on-campus lectures and/or performances. All K-State volleyball and baseball home matches/games that are not selected as part of the Big 12 Conference television package will be broadcast live on K-StateHD.TV, while HD coverage of selected Olympic sports or available football and men's/women's basketball games will also be available.

And in regards to football games, we are also pleased to announce that our September 3 season opener against Eastern Kentucky will be broadcast live exclusively on K-StateHD.TV beginning with a 5:20 p.m. pregame show, marking the first time in school history that a live home football game will be made available solely online. We appreciate the Big 12 Conference working with us to allow this game to be broadcast exclusively on K-StateHD.TV.

A majority of the on-demand programming, including campus lectures and performances, will be available for free, while live athletic events, classic games and other various programming will be premium-based content.

In keeping with our goal of providing value to our university, the project will also afford an unmatched educational opportunity to both department staff and students as K-State owns and operates a fully functional HD truck, allowing potential student workers to get hands-on experience utilizing the latest HD technology and programming equipment. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at K-State is also working to create specific curriculum around K-StateHD.TV to better prepare our students for the job market. By working with K-StateHD.TV, students will gain programming and production experience that will put them ahead of the curve and will enhance their prospects as they enter the professional sector.

The subscription service remains a product of our online All-Access platform through the CBS College Network so current subscribers will have immediate access to premium K-State HD.TV content such as live games and gameday shows. Also, All-Access users will benefit from the upgraded viewing experience without an increase in subscription costs as they will remain at $9.95 per month and $79.95 per year. To visit the home of K-StateHD.TV, or to subscribe to the service, visit www.k-statehd.tv.

In other department news, we are all gearing towards the start of the fall season as both the football and volleyball programs have begun training camp. In track news, I would like to wish NCAA Champion high jumper Erik Kynard the best of luck in the upcoming World Championships in Korea later this month! Erik will be a terrific representative of Kansas State University as a member of Team USA. And fellow NCAA Champion Ryann Krais finished third in the heptathlon at the Thorpe Cub this past weekend in California as Team USA defeated Germany.

That's it for today - remember to get your season or single-game tickets now for volleyball, football and men's and women's basketball.

Our student-athletes are working hard towards another terrific season, and we are excited about the prospects for 2011-12 with the additional exposure and accessibility each and every one of our fans will receive from K-StateHD.TV. We hope to see you in Ahearn Field House on August 30 and again at Bill Snyder Family Stadium September 3 --- but if you cannot be in attendance, be sure and tune in to K-StateHD.TV!

Go Cats!
