Letter from A.D. John Currie - September 1

Good afternoon Wildcats!

I assure you that after the much talked about events of the past few weeks I have never been more ready for the start of a fall athletic season. It's time to shift the focus of college athletics back to where it ought to be all the time - to the fields and courts on which our world-class student-athletes compete.

Here are a few updates from Wildcat Land as we head into a big weekend.

Eastern Kentucky Game, 3rd Annual Family Reunion Sold Out!
Earlier today we announced that our fans have stepped up once again to achieve our third-straight season-opening sellout at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. As the game is just a few days away, please remember to arrive early to avoid traffic congestion that may arise around town, especially due to the K-18 project west of Manhattan - click here for our press release on traffic in the city and around the stadium.

K-StateHD.TV Premieres with Exciting Volleyball Win
On Tuesday night, 3,000-plus fans filled Ahearn Field House for Coach Fritz and our volleyball team's home-opening win and K-StateHD.TV broadcast premiere! The telecast was terrific and has garnered rave reviews, beginning with the K-State Gameday pregame show hosted by Brian Smoller and former Wildcat great Liz Wegner to the high definition, multi-camera action of the match. If you have not already, check it out at www.k-statehd.tv as Saturday's football season opener is on the schedule!

Big 12 Update
K-State remains fully committed to the Big 12 Conference and its future. There is great solidarity among the nine league institutions and an eagerness to achieve the stability our students, fans and alumni deserve. President Schulz and I remain actively engaged with our conference administration and fellow presidents and athletic directors in proactively determining our next steps. We will keep you updated as this process continues. We also will ensure that our focus remains on our 465 student-athletes who are prepared for another great year in 2011-12!

Upgrades for Student-Athletes and Fans Alike
In previous letters we have mentioned upgrades throughout the athletics complex, including the new BSFS playing surface (did you see the appreciative comments from our players in Mark Janssen's column Monday?) and the upper deck east side (View Level) restroom additions. Fans seated in the View Level will also experience brand new concession choices this season including grilled items such as angus burgers, sliders and sausages. New items available elsewhere in the stadium include Papa John's pizza, Dippin' Dots ice cream and grilled chicken sandwiches. Sodexo, our concessionaire, has a wide variety of offerings in the south end zone and concourse stands including funnel cakes, BBQ, nachos, cotton candy, sno cones, fresh lemonade and much more! We are continuously striving toward our goal of the Best Fan Experience in the Big 12!.

Football Season is Here
We are excited about getting another football season underway and all of the pageantry that goes into a football Saturday - the tailgating, the atmosphere, the band, cheerleaders and Classy Cats and, of course, our fans and student-athletes! I know Dr. Frank Tracz and the Pride of Wildcatland Band are looking forward to Saturday - we fed the entire band dinner a few weeks ago during their busy practice schedule, and all the 370-plus members are excited for another great season. And, don't forget about the postgame fireworks show at the stadium!

Refurbished Bramlage Coliseum Floor in Place
You may have already read or seen photos and videos of our new Bramlage Coliseum floor design that we unveiled on Monday. If you have not, click this link for the details. Over the last several months, our staff worked with both basketball coaching staffs to come up with a new design that focused on our new branding initiatives and would create a sharp look that our fans and television viewers would enjoy greatly - and this design was the unanimous choice!

Cross Country Runs Off Tomorrow
Finally, I would like to wish Coach Smith and our cross country teams the best of luck this weekend as they open the season on Saturday in Wichita. Our top returners include Martina Tresch and Boglarka Bozzay on the women's side and Adam Porter and Armando Del Valle on the men's side.

Thanks for all that you do for our department and our 465 student-athletes. We'll see you at Purple Power Play on Poyntz tonight and tomorrow, Ahearn Field House Friday and Saturday and of course Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and around the world on K-StateHD.TV!

Go Cats!
John Currie
