Good evening K-State Nation!

After a very productive set of Big 12 meetings and Fiesta Bowl events in
Phoenix, it is great to see the evening American Eagle jet flight to
MHK listed as "on-time" on the "big board" here at DFW Airport. I am
ready to get home and see my family!

This has been a historic day for the Big 12 as current Stanford athletic
director Bob Bowlsby was introduced earlier this morning as our new
conference commissioner. I believe this is a tremendous coup for the Big
12 and am grateful for the leadership and diligence shown by President
Schulz, Oklahoma State President and Big 12 Chairman Burns Hargis and
the other selection committee members in making it happen.

Bob Bowlsby is one of the most respected athletics leaders in the
country and has played an instrumental role in the transformation of the
Pac-12 Conference over the last several years. In addition to his
success as Stanford's AD, he has deep Midwest roots having previously
served for many years as AD at Iowa and Northern Iowa, while his
transcendent skills are illustrated by his role as a member of the board
of directors of the United States Olympic Committee.

appointment and more details on Commissioner-elect Bowlsby's background.

Meanwhile earlier this week acting commissioner Chuck Neinas led our AD's, coaches and SWA meetings in his normal steady and wise fashion. Commissioner Neinas has done and continues to do a great job of aggressively moving the Big 12 forward. We had excellent conversations about many topics, including of course the future of post-season football and the BCS, television, alignment and membership, and the potential implementation of a student-athlete miscellaneous expense allowance (MEA) among others.

This was the first time in several years that we have had in-person meetings together with our football, women's and men's basketball coaches. The format is for each coaches group to meet amongst themselves to discuss various issues and then each group comes in and meets with the ADs and reports on their discussions. As Commissioner Neinas pointed out to our media and bowl partner guests at our Monday night dinner, this year the Big 12 had the national champion in women's basketball (Baylor), the runner-up in men's basketball (KU) and the "3rd" place football team (Oklahoma State) - and as I looked around the room during each respective head coaches meeting it is hard to imagine a conference with more highly accomplished coaching leadership and competitiveness than the Big 12. Of course I consider our K-State head coaches to be the best of the bunch!

Finance Update
There have been several recent national articles regarding the tremendous progress we have been able to make at K-State over the last three years. The attached ESPN.com article this morning again focused on the positive financial status achieved thanks to the great performances of our student-athletes and coaches, the leadership of President Schulz and the generosity and loyalty of our donors and fans, as well as the continued careful stewardship and hard work of our coaches and staff.

It is important to remember that as a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation we have annual financial statements prepared by external auditors using Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP). "Mark-to-market" accounting requires that we include "unrealized" gains such as growth in our endowment's market value as well as show capital pledges as "accounts receivable" and thus revenue in our annual statement. For example, if a donor pledged $100,000 to be given over five years at $20,000 per year for the basketball training facility, the GAAP rules require us to include the present value of the entire $100,000 as current year revenue, even though we actually only receive $20,000 in that particular year.

On the other side of the ledger, our actual expenses are adjusted for the annual statement as well. For instance, any time we complete an athletic facility improvement, the value of that improvement rolls off the "books" of K-State Athletics (KSA) onto the books of the State of Kansas (even though KSA has the legal /financial responsibility to maintain and operate the facilities) so when we completed the $650,000 installation of the new infill AstroTurf field surface at Bill Snyder Family Stadium last year, that physical improvement transferred to the state, and, in turn, $650,000 was deducted from the expense column of our audited financial statement. As we've discussed previously these various debits and credits combined to give us a final audited financial statement result of a $23.39 million surplus. However, the actual operating cash surplus for the 2010-2011 fiscal year was $3.67 million.

My lovely CPA wife can attest that I have reached the limit of my ability to explain the intricacies of accounting rules and policies so let's switch to the practical side of this discussion and talk a little more about what this all means for achieving K-State's vision of a model intercollegiate athletics program.

It's definitely a lot more pleasant to talk about a surplus than a deficit, and achieving a positive run of financial statements is a huge advantage for K-State in achieving our short and long-term goals.

Here are seven examples of what your role in helping K-State achieve this positive trend means, and how those dollars are being invested:

1. Kansas State University's annual direct support of intercollegiate athletics, already among the lowest of peer schools, was reduced this year from $1.5 million to $1 million, enabling that $500,000 to be redirected to areas of critical academic need by President Schulz and Provost Mason. By the 2015 fiscal year this direct university support line item is scheduled to be completely eliminated.

2. This year alone we have directly impacted our student-athlete experience with more than $3 million in incremental facility improvements. For example, to get ready for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships we've invested about $375,000 in our track facilities. For the safety of our student-athletes and horses we rebuilt our outdoor equestrian riding arena surface to the tune of about $100,000. And Ahearn Field House is getting a $60,000 fresh interior coat of PURPLE paint, covering up the longtime and mysterious red/brown hues of the seating area. It's going to look awesome for our volleyball matches and indoor track meets, as well as for the Kansas State University sesquicentennial celebration next winter!

3. Our goal of championship athletic performances is enhanced by the ability to attract, retain and reward great coaches. For instance we've been able in the last few months to increase our football assistant coaches salary pool by 20-percent, while we also have among the most innovative and aggressive coaches performance incentive programs in the country for our assistant coaches across all sports.

4. We've been able to fast-track our major capital projects like the Basketball Training Facility and the West Stadium Center thanks to our ability to secure low interest long-term bonds as we continue our private fund-raising efforts. Thanks to your support we have planted our flag firmly in the realm of major college athletics, with $100 million in across-the-board athletic facility improvements under way!

5. Our commitment to fiscal responsibility includes anticipating major multi-million dollar deferred maintenance projects such as eventually replacing the roof of Bramlage Coliseum or rebuilding the deteriorating east stadium parking lots. We also have to plan for increased annual operating costs associated with new facilities like the Basketball Training Facility or the 250,000 square-foot West Stadium Center.

6. Both our fans and student-athletes and their families are benefiting from the $500,000 high-definition infrastructure investment that helped us launch K-StateHD.TV last August in conjunction with the University's Division of Communications and Marketing. K-StateHD.TV has become the No. 1 premium institutional digital network in the country this year, and our production and distribution have drawn rave reviews from our fans, fellow institutions and even our television partners.

7. And finally, but most importantly, your gifts have enabled us to offer tremendous everyday support towards a world-class experience for all 444 Wildcat student-athletes, be it academic support, sports medicine treatments, weight training and quality travel and competition experiences, while we have maintained or increased resources for our coaches in their national and international recruitment efforts.

Grass-Roots Support is the K-State Winning Edge
Keep in mind that the statement we have been discussing (and the national folks keep writing about) was last years! As we enter the final two months of the 2012 fiscal year our season ticket sales and Ahearn donations are on pace for another fine finish, but know that your dollars are important and needed to continue this positive momentum. Look what those $50 Ahearn memberships, season, single and group ticket purchases are adding up to and making possible, and be proud of your role in making great things possible for the K-State Nation!

WEEKEND UPDATE:
Although I have been out of town, the pace certainly hasn't slowed on the home front as our teams begin the final stretch of competition while also preparing for final exams. Here are some updates from around the department heading into the weekend:

Student-Athletes Host Third-Annual Powercat Choice Awards
Each year our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee produces the Powercat Choice Awards, a special night during which all 16 athletic teams are represented and honored by the their teammates and peers. It is great to see the camaraderie that our student-athletes have with one another! Click here for a complete recap of the winners from last night's program.

World-Class Talent Coming to MHK for Big 12 Track and Field Championships
We are less than a week away from having some of the world's top athletes in Manhattan as the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin next Friday at R.V. Christian Track Complex. Every year the Big 12 meet is one of the best in the nation and this year's event is a must-see for any sports fan with numerous Olympic hopefuls competing on our home track. Numerous facility upgrades at the track complex will also greet fans as new seating along the east side of the track and signage are among the improvements. Fans can purchase tickets through the K-State Ticket Office in person, by calling 1-800-221-2287 or online at kstatesports.com/tickets. There are multiple options for tickets with single session tickets starting at $10 for adults. Youth and senior tickets are only $5. There is an all-session pass available for $20 for adults and just $10 for youth and senior citizens. Click here to visit the online meet headquarters and find schedules, rosters and other event information. We'll see you out at the track next weekend!

Several Cats Heading to NFL
Congratulations to Wildcats Tysyn Hartman and Ray Kibble as they signed free-agent contracts early this week with NFL teams. Tysyn will be heading down the road to Kansas City, while Ray will be playing for the Atlanta Falcons. I appreciate each of these young men for being terrific role models and representatives of Kansas State University during their careers and wish them the best as they begin to realize their NFL dreams.

Powercat Auction a Huge Success
Last week's sold-out Powercat Auction in Bramlage turned into one of the greatest nights in the 28-year history of the event as it grossed $305,335 for the Ahearn Fund. This year's total eclipsed last year's mark of $275,000 by more than $30,000, and will directly enhance the student-athlete experience for all Wildcat student-athletes. We appreciate our fans stepping up in support of our student-athletes by participating in the auction this year, and every dollar will be used to help provide our programs and student-athletes a world-class experience. Many people, including Alex Kringen on our Ahearn Fund staff and the volunteer auction committee, worked tirelessly to make this event possible, and I appreciate all of their hard work to make the night enjoyable for all.

Niedermayerova Back in NCAA Championships
Petra Niedermayerova became just the second player in K-State history to be selected in consecutive years to compete in singles at the NCAA Tennis Championships in Georgia later this month. Petra was one of seven Big 12 tennis players selected for the championships - stay tuned to k-statesports.com later this month for more information on the event including official draws.

That's it for today. With finals coming up, we have a light competition schedule this weekend, but we hope to see you out at Tointon Stadium as the baseball team takes on Nebraska-Omaha at 6:30 p.m. tonight, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.

Go Cats!

Good afternoon Wildcat Nation!

A busy weekend is upon us here at K-State, and many of you already may
be on your way to Manhattan for tonight's 28th-annual Powercat Auction
at Bramlage. Another sellout crowd will be on hand, and we hope to see
you all on campus over the next several days as we head into an exciting
weekend of events. Here are the highlights and a breakdown of the
events:

Friday:
Powercat Auction and Golf Tournament
We had a great turnout at this morning's Powercat Golf Tournament at
Colbert Hills Golf Course to kick off the weekend. In just a little bit,
we will fill Bramlage for the Powercat Auction, which remains our
department's single-largest fundraising event and supports the Ahearn
Fund, our National Fund for Student-Athlete Excellence. Last year's
event raised more than $275,000 to directly enhance the student-athlete
experience for all Wildcat student-athletes, and all of our Powercat
Members ($300 donation level and above) will be a part of this year's
event. Click here for a full list of auction items that will be
available at tonight's event.

Baseball Opens Series with Oklahoma State
For those fans unable to attend the Powercat Auction, head over to
Tointon Stadium for tonight's 6:30 p.m., matchup with the Cowboys. It's
Ladies Night at the ballpark as fans can purchase a $10 ticket package
that includes one general admission bench ticket and one pink K-State
baseball hat. Additionally, Manhattan area vendors will be available
during the regularly-scheduled pregame tailgate on Friday beginning at 5
p.m., directly behind the stadium off College Avenue. The pregame
tailgate includes a hot dog meal for $4 and a cheeseburger meal for $5.

        Saturday:
West Stadium Center Groundbreaking Ceremony
Saturday's spring game activities kick off with a monumental event as we officially break ground on the West Stadium Center project. Fans are invited to attend the 11:30 a.m., ground-moving ceremony which will include President Schulz, Coach Snyder as well as representatives from our architectural firms AECOM and Heery and our construction partners GE Johnson and Mortenson Construction. We couldn't be more excited about this project and know that our fans will enjoy watching the construction process transpire over the course of the next 18 months. Certainly, there will be noticeable construction throughout the 2012 football season, but we know that the finished product will be a transformational facility for all of our fans, student-athletes and the entire Manhattan community. For updates throughout the construction process, click here to visit the official site of the West Stadium Center project.

Spring Game Kicks at 1:10 p.m.
Following the WSC groundbreaking ceremony, fans will get their first chance to watch the 2012 Wildcats in the annual Purple/White game at 1:10 p.m. Click here for gameday details which include parking information, ticket and gate updates and listening/viewing options for those who cannot make it to the stadium. In addition to our K-State Sports Network affiliates, the game can be heard on SiriusXM and also can be seen live on K-StateHD.TV. Coach Snyder, the rest of our coaching staff and our student-athletes have been working very hard this spring in preparations for the fall. Season tickets for our seven-game home schedule are currently on sale and are going fast as we look to have a sold-out Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the 2012 season!

Volleyball Wraps Up Spring with Scrimmage
Also on Saturday afternoon, Coach Fritz and the volleyball team will wrap up their spring practices with a 1:15 p.m., scrimmage at Ahearn Field House. If you get the opportunity, head over to Ahearn and take a look at some additional improvements we have made to the facility. We are currently in the process of painting all of the upper-level bleachers a nice deep purple to replace the reddish-brown color that has been prevalent for years. You can notice the significant difference and improvement that a coat of paint makes by comparing the new color with the existing hue as we are at the halfway point of completing the project.

Baseball Battles Oklahoma State at Tointon
Following the spring game, head on over to Tointon and catch game two of our Big 12 baseball series with Oklahoma State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

Sunday:
Baseball Concludes Series
On Sunday, fans can bring their dog to the ballpark for the 12 p.m., series finale at no additional charge, while the first 100 dogs through the gates will receive a K-State dog bowl. There will also be a water station provided at the Fan Experience gazebo located down the left-field line. Fans with dogs are designated to the grassy area down the left-field line.

Other Weekend Action:
While it certainly will be busy around our facilities this weekend, several of our teams are on the road at big events. The tennis team is at Texas A&M today for a Big 12 match, while Coach Sweeney and the rowing team are in Oklahoma City Saturday at the Big 12 Championships. Both golf teams are competing at the Big 12 Championships this weekend with the men in Trinity, Texas, and the women in Lawrence. As I am writing this letter, the men are in fifth place and the women are tied for seventh as both are playing their second rounds of the day. And finally, the track and field teams continue to prepare for next month's Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Manhattan and are split among two of the bigger meets in the country in the Penn Relays and Drake Relays. Boglarka Bozzay won the 800m at the Penn Relays just a few hours ago, while All-American Ryann Krais took fourth in the 400m hurdles. Be sure to visit k-statesports.com for recaps and results from all of these events.

A Few Additional Notes in Closing
The final women's basketball RPI ratings have been released and the Big 12, for the fifth straight year, is the No. 1 RPI conference in America, while the Wildcats checked in at No. 17 in the individual team rankings. In fact, nine of the 10 league teams finished among the top 60 teams in the country. Finally, we have been extremely pleased with the progress that we have made since our launching of K-StateHD.TV and the latest CBS quarterly rankings again show great things for Wildcat fans. K-State ranks No. 1 among all CBS-affiliated institutions in monthly, yearly and total subscribers. If you haven't yet checked it out, click here for some free content and more information on how to subscribe to our full HD service.

That's it for today. As always, we appreciate your continued support of our student-athletes, and have fun cheering on the Cats throughout this busy weekend!

Go Cats!

Good evening K-State Nation!

While our student-athletes begin preparing for next month's final exams,
we will have some exciting events in the weeks ahead with the 2012 Big
12 Track and Field Championships at R.V. Christian Track Complex as well
as the completion of our baseball, tennis, golf and rowing seasons. And
behind the scenes, we continue to make terrific progress in the
planning stages of the West Stadium Center project - the groundbreaking
ceremony is only one week away!

For those of you on campus, you may have run into Coach Weber earlier
today as he and a few members of our staff spent the morning touring the
campus and meeting numerous students, faculty and administrators. I
continue to be impressed with how well Coach Weber has transitioned into
his role here and couldn't be more excited to have him lead our
program.

As you can see, there has been a lot going on so let's get right to some additional updates from around the department.

Finch Honored at Equestrian National Championships
Our equestrian team competed in the 2012 NCEA National Championships last weekend in Waco and came home with national distinction. Leading our sixth-ranked hunt seat squad was junior Meredith Finch, who was named Most Outstanding Player for her performance in Equitation on the Flat after an undefeated weekend against her opponents. Congrats to Meredith on her national recognition and the rest of our equestrian squad on a terrific season.

Secretary Vilsack Makes Stop on Campus
This past week, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack was on campus to deliver the latest Landon Lecture at McCain Auditorium. He also made an appearance at Bill Snyder Family Stadium to meet Coach Snyder and to inspect our state-of-the-art playing surface. The field, which is made partially from soybeans, has been highlighted by the United Soybean Board and the Biobased Products Coalition since it was installed last summer and was even a subject in one of President Obama's recent directives on biobased products. Click here for more information.

Powercat Auction and Golf Tournament Approaching
With the 2012 Purple/White spring game just a little more than a week away, that also means we are closing in on our annual Powercat Auction and Golf Tournament, both of which will be held April 27. The Powercat Auction remains our department's single largest fundraising event and supports the Ahearn Fund, our National Fund for Student-Athlete Excellence. Last year's event raised more than $275,000 to directly enhance the student-athlete experience for all Wildcat student-athletes, and all of our Powercat Members ($300 donation level and above) will be a part of this year's event. Click here for full details and registration information for both the golf tournament at Colbert Hills and the auction.

Student Athletics Passes Selling Quickly
While we still have a month left in the spring semester, excitement is already building towards the 2012-13 athletics season as evidenced by our student ticket sales. So far, we are approximately 1,500 tickets ahead of sales at this time last year, so we encourage students to act now to reserve their seats - which are among the best student locations for football and basketball in the country - through their iSIS account. Any questions regarding student tickets can be directed to Adam Prough in our fan experience and sales office at (785) 532-6650 or aprough@kstatesports.com. Let's fill Bill Snyder Family Stadium with 8,000 strong!

2013 Non-Conference Football Schedule Set
In other football news, we have finalized the non-conference portion of our 2013 schedule with all three games slated to be played at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. In addition to our five-game home conference slate in 2013, we will face 2011 FCS national champion North Dakota State, the University of Louisiana out of the Sun Belt Conference and finally UMass, who is now an FBS program playing in the Mid-American Conference. Coach Snyder and I continue to work together on scheduling as we strive to provide our fans with no fewer than six or seven home games a year, and 2013 will afford us a unique opportunity to have eight total home games as we open the new West Stadium Center.

Help Bring ESPN College GameDay to Manhattan!
For the first time ever, ESPN will film a College GameDay football commercial on a university campus, and as you always do, Wildcat Nation again has the opportunity to show that we have among the most passionate fans in the country. Beginning Monday, fans of more than 120 schools can vote for the chance to have ESPN College GameDay visit its college town for filming. Just vist any of these sites - www.GameDayVote.com, m.GameDayVote.com on mobile devices or facebook.com/collegegameday - to cast your vote. Voting will begin at 11 a.m. CT on Monday and end at 11 p.m. CT on May 2. Fans are allowed one vote per day. The school whose fans tally the most votes wins, so visit one of these sites each day, and let's again show our Wildcat Pride as we get ready for the 2012 football season!

Academic Honors Continue to Roll In
Our student-athletes continue to have tremendous success in the classroom in addition to leading their teams on the playing field. Just this week, Victor Ojeleye of the men's basketball team was named one of the Top 10 male finalists for the prestigious Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. Victor was elected by his peers this past year to serve as Vice-Chair of the Big 12's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) while he also earned the inaugural Dr. Gerald Lage Award from the Big 12 in 2010-11, which is given to student-athletes who have earned 100 or more hours of credit with a cumulative 3.8 GPA. He is on track to graduate next month with a double major in accounting and finance. In addition, four members of the women's golf team (Gianna Misenhelter, Paige Osterloo, Whitney Pyle and Hanna Roos) and two from the men's squad (Chase Chamberlin and Curtis Yonke) were the latest Wildcat additions to the Academic All-Big 12 teams. Congrats to all of these student-athletes for their commitment in the classroom!

Joni Smoller Elected to NACMA Board
As I have said many times, our athletics staff here at K-State is terrific and well-respected across the country. Joni Smoller, our director of fan experience and sales, has been instrumental providing our fans the best fan experience in the Big 12, and she recently was recognized by her peers by being named to the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) board for the 2012-13 year. She joins numerous other staff members who hold elected positions in their national organizations, and I am proud of her hard work.

Another Busy Spring Week
It was great to see a big crowd at Tointon Stadium last Friday night as many of our servicemen and women and their families from Fort Riley attended Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark. The Cats battled a red-hot Baylor team in three exciting close ballgames before sweeping Northern Colorado in a midweek series. Coach Bietau and the tennis squad defeated No. 45 Missouri on the road Sunday, while our track teams sent split squads to Wichita and El Paso for weekend competition. And, if you haven't already, click here to read Mark Janssen's latest Sports Extra story on track and field student-athlete Devin Dick - a must-read!! Our women's golf team was led by Whitney Pyle this weekend in a rain-shortened tournament in Indiana with a seventh-place finish, while Coach Knight's squad went on to finish fourth out of 15 teams. Finally, I would like to congratulate Coach Norris and our men's golf team for their tournament win last week at the Cowboy Classic in Arizona. Ben Juffer set a 54-hole school record with a 205 to take the individual title!

That's it for today. Good luck to all of our teams competing this weekend - track and field, rowing and baseball are all on the road. We hope to see you at tennis at 1 p.m. Saturday as we battle KU and of course at all of the events surrounding the spring football game next weekend. As always, we appreciate your continued support of our student-athletes.

Go Cats!

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
