It is permissible for you as a student-athlete to earn income through legitimate employment opportunities. However, the NCAA has established a few requirements that are supposed to ensure employment is consistent with amateurism principles and protect against extra benefits. It is important to understand these rules in order to avoid jeopardizing your eligibility.
A student-athlete may receive compensation:
• Only for work that is actually performed;
• Only for the number of hours actually worked; and
• At a rate that is consistent with the going rate for similar employment opportunities in the area.
A student-athlete may not receive:
• Payment for the value you might bring to the employer because of publicity, reputation, fame, or personal following that you have obtained because of your athletics ability;
• Transportation to work or other benefits, unless the same benefits are available equally to all employees;
• Compensation for any endorsement for a commercial entity or product.
This form must be completed if you plan to have a job during the academic year or summer. If your current employment changes, please communicate those changes to Compliance as soon as possible. There is also an Employer Form that needs to be completed by the person or business by whom you are employed. Both should be submitted to Compliance Services Office when completed.
Vehicle Information Form
This form must be completed prior to being eligible for athletic competition. This form outlines general details of your vehicle information. Please print and complete this form anytime vehicle information records need to be updated (i.e. got a new car, changed cars, etc.). MAKE SURE YOU SIGN AND DATE the form at the bottom of the page. Submit this form to the Compliance Services Office upon completion.
Summer League Registration Form
This form must be completed and submitted by ALL men's and women's basketball and baseball student-athletes regardless of whether or not one is participating in a summer league. The completed form must be submitted prior to competition in any summer basketball (M/W) or baseball leagues. If one is not competing in a summer league, this must be verified by still completing the form and submitting it to compliance.
Outside Competition Form
This form, when completed, will permit a student-athlete to participate in outside competition as an individual. It is permissible for a student-athlete to participate in an outside competition as an individual during the academic year in the student-athlete's sport, as long as the student-athlete represents only himself or herself in the competition and does not engage in such competition as a member of or receive expenses from an outside team. This form must be completed and approved by the head coach and Compliance Services before the student-athlete engages in outside competition.
SAF (Student Assistance Fund)
This form must be completed and submitted with proof of purchase in order to be reimbursed for any expenses directly or indirectly associated with being a student athlete. If reimbursement is for educational expenses, a copy of the class syllabus and/or confirmation from a professor that item is necessary for class is REQUIRED. Please contact the Compliance Services Office for approval of other uses of this fund.
Summer School Application
This form must be completed and approved by your sport academic counselor and your head coach PRIOR to the receipt of any athletics aid during summer sessions. If this form is not completed, approved and submitted to the Compliance Services Office, you will not receive athletics aid during the summer sessions.
Fee for Lesson Form
This form is used to ensure that the student-athlete is following the regulations set forth by the NCAA regarding fee for lesson arrangements. This form should be submitted to the Compliance Office before the student-athlete engages in any sort of fee for lesson arrangement.
The legislation governing employment (see above) is still applicable if you are providing lessons for a fee. However, there are additional guidelines you must follow when providing lessons, which are outlined below (per NCAA Bylaw 22.214.171.124):
a) Institutional facilities are not used;
b) Playing lessons shall not be permitted;
c) The institution must obtain and kepp on file documentation of the recipient of the lesson(s) and the fee for the lesson(s) provided during any time of the year;
d) the compensation is paid by the lesson recipient (or the recipient's family) and not another individual or entity;
e) Instruction to each individual is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson when the instruction involves more than one individual at a time;
f) The student-athlete does not use his or her name, picture, or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions.
