MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State celebrated another outstanding athletics year on Thursday night as student-athletes from each of the school’s 16 varsity sports converged on Bramlage Coliseum for the third annual Mark A. Chapman Powercat Choice Awards.

The ceremony resembles the ESPY Awards and includes all team and individual highlights from the past year both on the field and in the classroom.  All the performance-related awards were voted on by members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).  The voting was based on the accomplishments of sporting teams from Spring 2011 to Winter 2012

Top team honors on the night went to the 2011 football and women’s volleyball teams, while the volleyball team’s win at No. 2 Nebraska to advance to the Sweet 16 was the Show-stopping Moment of the Year.  Both teams’ success in the fall jump-started a year that saw K-State become one of just five schools in the country to advance to a bowl game and win games in the NCAA volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball tournament.

Women’s golf captured the Wildcat Cup on the night for its excellence in the five core areas of student-athlete well-being: academics, athletics, career, personal and service.

Erik Kynard (men’s track and field) took Male Athlete of the Year honors Thursday. Kynard remains one of the top high jumpers in the world and captured a national title at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships. Fellow track and field teammate Ryann Krais earned Female Athlete of the Year honors after winning an NCAA Outdoor title in the heptathlon last spring.

Bill Snyder (football) was named Coach of the Year after leading the football team to the 2012 AT&T Cotton Bowl following a 10-3 record. Snyder earned Big 12 and National Coach of the Year honors following the Cats’ success in 2011.

JuliAnne Chisholm (volleyball/women’s basketball/track and field) was named Best Female Athlete in a Supporting Role after lettering in volleyball and basketball this season. Chisholm also is currently working out with the Wildcat track and field team. Baseball’s James Allen took honors as the Top Male Athlete in a Supporting Role after earning All-America honors as the Cats’ closer in 2011.

In addition, Tyler Lockett (football) and Petra Niedermayerova (women’s tennis) were named the male and female Newcomers of the Year.  Lockett earned Walter Camp All-America honors last year as a true freshman after leading the nation in kickoff return average.  Niedermayerova became the first player in Big 12 history to win Big 12 Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year honors in the same season last year.

The recipient of the Most Inspirational Award was Kathleen Ludwig of the women’s volleyball team, while Victor Ojeleye of the men’s basketball team earned the Purple Pride Award, which is given to the student-athlete who demonstrates the most school spirit.

Several individuals were honored for their academic excellence during the evening, highlighted by Tysyn Hartman (football) and Krais (women’s track and field) earning the Kansas State Male and Female Scholar-Athlete Awards.  The honor recognizes the outstanding senior male and female student-athletes for the 2010-11 season.

Anna Young (rowing) and Mike Kindel (baseball) were this year’s recipients of the Bob and Lila Snell Award of Excellence and Effort, recognizing the outstanding male and female student-athletes who improved their academic standing through sustained effort and commitment to learning.

Mantas Silkauskas (men’s track and field) was honored with the Gina Sylvester Memorial Award.  The award recognizes an arts and sciences student who has progressed toward graduation and used the advising system to overcome challenges.

Chelsie Bonds (women’s track and field) was the recipient of the Veryl and Fern Switzer Campus Leadership Award.  The award recognizes a student-athlete who is involved in student organizations and multicultural affairs, demonstrates leadership on a team and on campus, and is active in community service.

Chisholm (volleyball/women’s basketball) was awarded the Scholastic Achievement Award, which recognizes a senior letterwinner with the highest cumulative grade-point average in undergraduate work.  She has a 3.96 GPA with degrees in athletic training and life sciences and has a full scholarship to attend medical school at the University of Kansas, one of only five in the state offered.

The athletics department, which has led the Big 12 Conference in overall graduation rate in four of the past five seasons, has had another outstanding academic year in 2011-12. Tysyn Hartman was a Campbell Trophy Finalist and NFF National Scholar Athlete in 2011. A combined 430 student-athletes were named to the Spring 2011 and Fall 2012 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

K-State also was the lone Big 12 school and one of just five in the nation this year to advance to a bowl game and win games in the NCAA volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball tournaments.
