MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State Fan Experience and Sales and Athletics Communication departments recently received a total of nine national honors for excellence in 2012-13 from their respective organizations during the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) national convention in Orlando, Fla.
“The significant national recognition achieved by our athletics fan experience and communications staffs is representation of the commitment throughout the department toward the vision of being a model intercollegiate athletics program,” Athletics Director John Currie said. “Accomplishments like these boost recognition of the K-State brand, which benefits student-athletes and students alike as they pursue their post-collegiate ambitions. I really appreciate the creativity, hard work and long hours our staffs put in and congratulate them for these honors.”
The fan experience and sales department earned two awards, including a first-place honor and a third-place effort, for its work during the 2012-13 athletics season from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA).
The department took home gold for season ticket sales campaign with the 2012 “16 Goals” campaign for K-State football. The promotional campaign, which was a collaborative effort with the K-StateHD.TV, internet services and athletics communications staffs, took the internet and various social media platforms by storm during the summer of 2012. The 16-part video series, along with billboard, radio and print campaigns, highlighted by head coach Bill Snyder’s “16 Goals for Success,” was a precursor to the 2012 Big 12 Championship season.
The bronze award garnered by the department came in the radio commercial category, which was for the “16 Goals” football radio advertisement. The radio ad ran on the K-State Sports Network affiliates throughout the state of Kansas to assist in the season ticket campaign.
Scott Garrett, Associate Athletic Director for Ticketing and Fan Strategies, and Joni Smoller, Senior Director of Fan Experience and Sales, and Adam Prough, Assistant Director of Fan Strategies, along with Fan Experience and Sales graduate assistants Bethany Cordell and Phil Lewicki, accepted the awards during NACMA's 23rd annual Convention, June 13-15 in Orlando, Fla.
“Our staff prides itself on efficiency and creativity as it provides the best fan experience in the Big 12,” said Garrett. “The 16 Goals campaign was one of many highlights for our staff this year, and I couldn’t be more proud of them for this recognition.”
The athletic communications department also received seven accolades from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for their outstanding publication work in 2012-13 during their annual convention, June 12-15, in Orlando. K-State tied for second among Big 12 schools for national honors earned, as Oklahoma (eight) and Kansas (seven) also represented the league with at least seven or more honors.
The department earned "Best in Nation" distinction for the men's basketball poster, while the football poster celebrating the Big 12 title was second in the nation and the football regular season schedule and women’s basketball posters finished third. Also judged among the top 10 in the nation were the women’s basketball media guide (fourth), the football Fiesta Bowl poster (sixth) and the track and field poster (eighth).
“I am proud of the work that our office produces on a yearly basis,” stated Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Kenny Lannou. “We have a hard-working staff filled with talented professionals in the media relations field. They do a terrific job balancing the best interests of all K-State student-athletes, coaches and the media in their work while maintaining a daily focus of helping tell the many stories here at K-State.”
All of the posters, as well as the covers for each of K-State's media guides were produced by graphics designer, Ron Cook. Over the last five seasons, over 15 K-State sports posters designed by Cook have been judged among the Top 10 nationally.
Over the last eight years Kansas State's publications have reached impressive heights in national judging with 20 media guides earning Top 5 national honors and 35 being named among the top three in the district. The 2012-13 women's basketball guide was written and designed by assistant director of athletics communications Randy Peterson.
