13 Wildcats Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team

IRVING, Texas. – The Kansas State equestrian team had 13 riders named to the Academic All-Big 12 Equestrian team in an announcement by the conference on Tuesday. The Wildcats had 11 first team selections and two second team selections.

Senior Nicholle Hatton, juniors Henley Adkins, Sydney Anson, Gretchen Koenen, Alyssa Lombardi, Christina Martinelli and Taylor Schmidt along with sophomores Ashley Anderson, Molly Dunn, Paige Kemper and Halle Kutsche all earned first team honors. This is the second consecutive Academic All-Big 12 Equestrian First Team honor for Hatton, Adkins, Lombardi and Martinelli. 

Senior Emily Castellini and sophomore Brynn Critcher were named to the second team. Both student athletes were awarded Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors for the first time in their Wildcat careers.

“I am so proud of how our athletes have performed in the classroom this year,” said head coach Casie Maxwell. “It is extremely challenging to be a successful student and athlete, but our team has managed their time well and been successful in both areas.”

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

K-State travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma, this weekend for the 2016 Big 12 Championship and enter the competition as the No. 4 seed. The Wildcats will face the No. 1 seed Baylor in the first round on Friday with the winner advancing on to compete against the winner of TCU and Oklahoma State for the championship on Saturday.
