K-State Men Finish Top-10 at NCAA Midwest Regional
Nov 10, 2017 | Cross Country
AMES, Iowa – The Kansas State men's cross country team put a cap on a historic season on Friday, as the Wildcats earned their best finish since 2004 at the NCAA Midwest Regional placing 10th overall with 314 points.
The K-State women concluded their season with a 19th-place finish (out of 33 teams) with 451 points.
The men's team, which entered the race with a No. 12 ranking in the Midwest Region, topped their ranking by finishing 10th as a team, narrowly defeating Iowa with 314 points on a tiebreaker. It was the best finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional since also placing 10th in 2004.
The men's team was led by senior Jeff Bachman, who finished the 10k race in 30:07.0, besting his regional finish in 2015 by over two minutes. Senior Colton Donahue followed Bachman's personal best with an impressive time of his own, setting a new 10k personal best with a time of 30:10.0. The whole men's team set personal bests in the 10k on Friday, with all seven runners finishing under 31 minutes and within the top-100 finishers.
"It was the same story for the whole year, they had a good small gap between 1-5 and that was important," Head coach Ryun Godfrey said of the men's team. "These guys run together and train together, and they carried it out today, I am really proud of them."
The women's team hit the Iowa State Cross Country course first on Friday, and were led out by senior Kayla Doll, who hung tight with the lead pack throughout the race, finishing 31st overall with a time of 20:59.4. Doll was followed by freshman Cara Melgares, who set a new personal best with a time of 21:15.9, finishing in 52nd place. Junior Emma Wren set a new personal best with a time of 21:26.6, cutting 12 second off of her time at the Big 12 Championship two weeks ago.
"I was very impressed with Kayla (Doll) and Cara (Melgares)," said Godfrey. "I was also happy with Emma [Wren] because she put herself out there which was a different tactic then what she has been using. I thought that Kayla did a great job and ran hard from the start. Overall, I was impressed with the effort from them today."
In the women's race, Missouri's Karissa Schweizer claimed her second consecutive NCAA Midwest Regional crown in 19:59.9. Schweizer is the reigning NCAA Cross Country Champion. On the men's side, Illinois' Jonathan Davis won the men's race in 29:06.2, as he led Illinois to a fourth-place finish.
The Iowa State women's team claimed the team crown with 90 points and will be joined by Big 12 counterpart Oklahoma State (103 points) at the NCAA Championship meet on November 18 in Louisville, Kentucky. Iowa State and Oklahoma State also claimed the top two spots in the men's race, as the Cyclones won the men's race with 69 points, and the Cowboys took second with 74 points.
In addition to Iowa State and Oklahoma State's NCAA Championship berth, 13 at-large bids will be determined Saturday afternoon. After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals per gender are selected to compete at the NCAA Championships
