K-State Places Eight on Academic All-Big 12 Teams

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State women’s basketball placed eight student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 teams in an announcement by the Big 12 Conference on Thursday. Seven of K-State’s honorees received a first team citation, while one garnered second team honors.
Since the beginning of the Big 12 in 1996-97, K-State has earned a league-best 122 Academic All-Big 12 honors including 99 first team citations which also paces the Big 12. The eight Academic All-Big 12 selections marked the highest total for the Wildcats since the 2008-09 season placed eight selections on the first team.
K-State student-athletes to earn Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors were: sophomore Kayla Goth (accounting), senior Breanna Lewis (general human ecology), junior Shaelyn Martin (kinesiology), junior Kaylee Page (accounting), senior Jessica Sheble (kinesiology), redshirt senior Kelly Thomson (nutritional sciences) and senior Kindred Wesemann (kinesiology). Martin and Thomson were two of five members of the 51 Academic All-Big 12 selections with a 4.0 grade point average.
Thomson and Wesemann earned their third career Academic All-Big 12 First Team honor. This was the second career Academic All-Big 12 First Team honor for Martin and Page, while Goth and Lewis earned their first career recognition. Sheble garnered her second career honor and her first appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
Earning second team honors for the first time in her career was redshirt freshman Lanie Page (secondary education-PE/health).
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, the women’s basketball academic all-league team consisted of 39 first team members combined with 11 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Kansas State will close out a two-game road trip on Saturday, as the Wildcats face TCU in Fort Worth at 3 p.m. Saturday’s game will be broadcast on FSN and the K-State Sports Network.
