MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State volleyball’s Brooke Heyne was named the National High School Coaches Association’s (NHSCA) Senior Volleyball Athlete of the Year, the organization announced.
This is the 18th year the NHSCA has honored high achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide. This year’s recipients, selected in a total of 20 boys’ and girls’ sports, are from 17 different states.
Heyne, entering her freshman season at K-State, led Skutt Catholic High School (Omaha, Nebraska) to a perfect 44-0 record, a Class B state championship and a No. 2 ranking in the USA Today Top 25. Heyne registered 474 kills, 362 digs and 40 service aces during her senior season.
A 5-foot-11 outside hitter, Heyne was named co-captain of the All-Nebraska team, along with being a MaxPreps First Team All-American and an Under Armour Third Team All-American. She was also honored as the 2016-17 Gatorade Nebraska Volleyball Player of the Year earlier this season.
Head coach Suzie Fritz and the Wildcats have made three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and five in the last six seasons, and completed their 12th 20-win season in Fritz’s 16 seasons at the helm of K-State. K-State begins its 2017 campaign on August 25 in Corvallis, Oregon, at the Oregon State Invitational.
