K-State Travels to Nationally-Renown Razorback Invitational

Jan 25, 2018 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State Track and Field team hits the road for the second consecutive week, as the team travels to Fayetteville, Arkansas to compete in the Razorback Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center against some of the nation's best. The two-day event begins on Friday at 12:45 p.m., and will pick up on Saturday at 11:10 a.m. CT.

K-State stands among 10 nationally-ranked teams at the meet, including host Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, USC, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, LSU, Texas A&M, Georgia and Ole Miss. The K-State women's team made their second consecutive appearance in the top-25 USTFCCCA Week One poll, coming in at No. 24. K-State also made appearances in Midwest Regional rankings, as the women placed No. 2 and the men's team came in at No. 5.

Among the men's competition, six of the 11 teams competing are ranked among the top 25 of the latest USTCCCA Poll, including No. 1 Florida, while the women's competition boasts nine in the top 25, including eight of the top 10 teams in the country.

"There is some quality competition at this meet. I think if you look at the field there are some really good athletes spread across the events," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "A lot of our team has been training well and we've done pretty good things there [Randal Tyson Track Center] in the past."

This weekend marks the first time K-State has competed at the Razorback Invitational, after competing in the Tyson Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track from 2011-2017. K-State has a rich history at the Tyson Invitational, as Shardia Lawrence shattered the K-State triple jump record at the meet in 2016 (13.75m/45-01.50), and Terrell Smith broke the school record in the men's 200-meters in 2015 (21.75).

At the Larry Wieczorek Invitational last weekend, several Wildcats had memorable moments, including six Wildcat event victories, 19 personal bests and several marks that rank amongst the top of the nation. Among them, weight throwers Mitch Dixon and Helene Ingvaldsen set new P.R.'s in the event, as Dixon won the event with a top throw of 21.31m/69-11, ranking him 13th in the country and second in the Big 12.

In the men's 1,000-meters, senior Lukas Koch ran the third fastest time in K-State 1,000-meter history, finishing second in the event in 2:24.34. Koch's historic feat marks a new P.R. in the event and ranks first in the Big 12 this season.
