K-State Sweeps Wildcat Invitational, Siba Sets New Moroccan Record
Jan 06, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State Track and Field team swept the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, behind an all-around effort in the field and on the track, that saw 22 K-State event titles, numerous personal bests, and the breaking of an international record.
As a team, the Wildcat men swept the competition, defeating Prairie View (87-70), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (93-53), and Texas Southern (89-52). On the women's side, K-State defeated both Prairie View (75-65) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (94-38).
"To see as many kids do better as they did before break, and I kind of anticipated that, all in all it was a pretty solid meet," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "Thinking back to the beginning, Rhizlane [Siba] set a new personal best in the high jump at 1.82m/5-11.50, which is very good jumping at this time of the year. Brett [Neelly] threw really good in the shot put, and Jess St. John also threw fairly solid. All of that I thought was very solid individually."
In the women's high jump, Siba got the day started with a spark, as she cleared her opening heights. With the bar set at 1.82m/5-11.50, Siba cleared it on her second attempt, setting a new personal best in the event and breaking her own Moroccan record of 1.81m/5-11.25 set at the K-State Winter Invitational in 2014. Siba would go on to win the event with a top height of 1.82m/5-11.50.
The personal bests continued into the throwing events, as senior Mitch Dixon earned a new personal best for the second consecutive meet, throwing a 20.83m/68-04.25 in the men's weight throw to win the event, besting his previous best set at the K-State Winter Invitational in December. Freshman Shaelyn Ward (17.48m/57-04.50), sophomore Ashley Petr (16.02m/52-07) and freshman Taylor Latimer (15.68m/51-05.50) would also set new career bests in the women's weight throw, while sophomore Helene Ingvaldsen went on to win the event with a throw of 19.82m/65-00.50.
In the horizontal jumps, the Wildcats combined for four first place finishes, with sophomore Nina Schultz winning the women's long jump with a jump of 6.04m/19-09.75, while senior Claudette Allen won the women's triple jump with a leap of 11.45m/37-06.75. In the men's events, junior Tom Pyle won the men's long jump with a top jump of 6.71m/22-00.25 and freshman Isaac Smallwood won the men's triple jump with a result of 13.27m/43-06.50.
St. John continued the dominance in the women's shot put by winning the event with a throw of 15.73m/51-07.50, also a new personal best, while Neelly tied his personal best of 18.94m/62-02 on two different throws.
On the track, the K-State men's and women's teams combined for 11 total event victories. In the women's 60-meter dash, indoor school record-holder A'Keyla Mitchell won the women's 60-meter dash in just 7.58, narrowing in on her record of 7.37 set at the KSU-KU-WSU triangular set in 2016. Meanwhile in the men's 60-meter dash, senior Terrell Smith won the event in convincing fashion, finishing in 6.76.
In the distance events, several freshmen made an impact in their races, including first-place finishes by freshmen Victoria Robinson (2:20.85) in the women's 800-meter run, Cayli Hume (1:26.49) in the women's 600-yard run and a first-place finish by freshman Ethan Powell (8:40.38) in the men's 3000-meter run.
With an already impressive day behind them, the K-State women took the track for the last event of the Wildcat Invitational in the women's 4x400-meter relay, in which the team of Lauren Taubert, Akia Guerrier, Nina Schultz and Ranae McKenzie put together an outstanding performance to win the event in 3:46.72, which fell within just seconds of the meet record (3:43.40) set by K-State in 2014.
The Wildcats will return to Ahearn Fieldhouse next week on January 13, as K-State plays host to an intriguing in-state battle with Wichita State and Kansas, which will be scored triangular with a combined men's and women's scoring. The K-State Track and Field team is also collecting non-perishable food items for the Flint Hills Breadbasket – Community Food Network, donations are welcome.
