Smith’s School Record Headlines Day Two of Texas Tech Shootout
Feb 10, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Terrell Smith bested his own school record and sophomore Nina Schultz put up the best pentathlon score in the country this weekend, as the Wildcats concluded impressive trips to the Texas Tech Shootout and Gorilla Classic on Saturday.
Smith stole the show on the second day of the Texas Tech Shootout, breaking his own school record in the men's 200-meters with a time of 20.86 to win the event. His new school record comes just two weeks after breaking the initial record of 20.90 at the Razorback Invitational, and just a week after running a 21.02 on a flat track at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational.
"As is evidence by the results there were some very good performances," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "We had a few kids get sick on the trip down here. We have a couple of weeks to get healthy before conference and do some sharpening. "
The Wildcats got their Saturday started in the women's shot put competition, where senior Jess St. John and freshman Gabby Lavington qualified for the finals of the event after their first three throws. St. John, who holds the fifth-best mark in school history, won the competition with her best throw coming on her first attempt of 15.48m/50-09.50, while Lavington finished fifth overall with a top mark of 13.61m/44-08. St. John has now placed first in all five shot put competitions she has competed in this season.
Following the women in ring, the men got their turn at throwing the shot. Junior Brett Neelly waited until his final throw to unleash a new personal best of 19.19m/62-11.50 to win the event and place him 12th in the NCAA and second in the Big 12 this season. Neelly also moved from the fifth to the fourth-best mark in school history with his winning throw.
Also in the field, the Wildcats racked up a successful afternoon in the long jump pit. Sophomore Jullane Walker jumped 7.38m/24-02.50 to improve upon his season best of 7.22m/23-08.25. Walker's new personal best placed him fifth overall in the competition.
In the men's 800 meters, junior Kurt Loevenstein led the Wildcats with an impressive 1:51.20 in the first heat of the race, which was good enough to place him fourth overall in the event. Loevenstein was followed in the second heat by sophomore Noah Stevenson, who finished 13th in 1:56.82.
Back in the Sunflower State, the Wildcats were well represented in distance races at the Gorilla Classic. In the women's mile, the Wildcats finished as the top-three collegians in the race, as junior Emma Wren placed second overall, behind former Wildcat Morgan Wedekind (unattached) in 4:54.61. Sophomore Erin Lee and freshman Sydney Collins followed their teammates finishing in 4:58.12 and 4:58.24, respectively.
In the final event of the Texas Tech Shootout, the 4x400 meter relay combination of Schultz, Akia Guerrier, A'Keyla Mitchell and Lauren Taubert wrapped up the meet with another top-10 mark. The relay finished third overall in the competition in 3:41.30 to mark the sixth-fastest women's 4x400 relay in K-State indoor history.
Next weekend's Nebraska Tune Up, held in Lincoln, Nebraska on Friday, February 16 will mark the Wildcats' last stop before heading up to Ames, Iowa for the Big 12 Championships on February 23-24.
