K-State Places Four in Top Seven at USA Individual Tournament
Feb 13, 2018 | Men's Golf
Led by sophomore Ben Fernandez in a tie for fourth place, the K-State men's golf team had four players land in the top seven spots following the final round of the USA Individual Tournament on Tuesday at the Magnolia Grove Golf Course.
"Overall it was a good experience for us coming off of our winter break," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We had five players post an under-par round, and we had a few that were in contention going into the final round."
Fernandez registered eight birdies over the three rounds en route to an even-par mark of 213, which included an even-par 71 in Tuesday's final round.
Three Wildcats – Jeremy Gandon, Trent Evans and Jacob Eklund– tied for seventh at 2-over par 215. Eklund shaved three strokes off his second-round score to finish at 2-under par 69, moving up four spots on the leaderboard.
JC Campbell was the biggest Wildcat mover of the day, climbing five spots and finishing 1-under par in the final round to record a 54-hole score of 5-over par 218 to tie for 11th. One shot behind Campbell was Massimino, who tied for 14th.
Kyle Vance finished in 24th place at 14-over 227, while Matthieu Caron dropped nine spots in the final round to finish in 25th place with a 15-over par 228 score.
"Our preparation back home has not been great because of the weather, so it was good for the guys to get in some competitive rounds. We have a lot of things to work on, but I like the direction the team is heading."
The Wildcats will play in their first team event of the spring season in 11 days, February 24-25, as they take part in the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Florida.
