MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fresh off four straight wins and a 5-1 start to the 2018 spring season, the Kansas State women's tennis team entered the Oracle/ITA national team rankings Tuesday, checking in at No. 35, while freshman Margot Decker enters the organization's singles rankings at No. 104.
K-State reached its highest team ranking since the final poll of the 2003 season, when the Wildcats finished as the 32nd-best team that year. It is the Cats' first week inside the ITA's national team rankings since 2014 when they were the 68th-ranked team to end the season.
Tuesday's rankings featured the top 50 squads in Division I while K-State was one of five Big 12 programs listed on the poll. The Cats have defeated two straight previously unbeaten squads (Washington State, Colorado) to extend their winning streak to four matches. It is the highest ranking under fourth-year head coach Danielle Steinberg.
Decker, who has three victories over ranked opponents in her freshman campaign playing at the No. 1 singles position for the Cats, is the first Wildcat to be ranked since Petra Niedermayerova in the 2014 season. The Blodelsheim, France, native has faced a ranked opponent in each of her last three matches, picking up two victories.
K-State will look to continue its early-season success with a Friday doubleheader, taking on No. 42 Nebraska (7-2) at 10:30 a.m., before facing Akron (6-5) at 4 p.m. Both matches are scheduled at Body First Tennis Center in Manhattan.
