MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's golf team will be opening the spring season and looking to defend their team title Sunday at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Arizona. The Invitational will be played at the par 72, 6,252-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club.
The two-day tournament, which K-State won with a 3-under 861 to open the spring slate last year, will consist of a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on both days with 36 holes being played on Sunday and the final round of 18 holes being played on Monday.
Kansas State will be led into the spring season by senior Connie Jaffrey, the individual runner-up at Westbrook a season ago after shooting 73-70-67—210 (-6). The Kilwinning, Scotland native looks to build on a successful fall season which included two individual tournament titles and a 71.93 stroke average and saw her ranked among the top-75 players in the country according to Golfstat.
"I am feeling pretty good opening the season there." Jaffrey said of a return to Westbrook, a course the team played just two weeks ago during an annual winter trip. "I think it is a great course that suits everyone's game."
Kansas State's lineup will feature Jaffrey, along with freshman Reid Issac, Niamh McSherry, Ella Adams and Darby Deans. Although many of the faces have changed, K-State head coach Kristi Knight is looking forward to seeing her young squad defend their crown.
"The cool thing about this team is that we have been a part of two tournament wins," Knight said. "We are talking about the No. 2 freshman class in the nation according to Golfstat. Even though Connie took part in last year's win the ladies that are traveling have already been involved in wins."
Joining Kansas State in the tournament field will be Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, UC Davis, Washington State and the tournament host Wisconsin.
