Schultz Wins High Jump, High Point Award on Final Day of Big 12 Championship
Feb 24, 2018 | Track & Field
AMES, Iowa – Sophomore Nina Schultz won the women's Big 12 High Point Award for the second time in her career, as her 23 points and high jump victory led the Wildcats to 24 all-conference honors at the Big 12 Championship in Ames, Iowa on Saturday.
The K-State women finished fifth overall with 85 points, while Texas claimed the women's title for the fourth time in the last five years. In the men's competition, K-State finished with 59.5 points to place sixth overall, as Texas Tech won with 143 points.
Schultz's high point award marks her second since winning the award at the 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Championship and just the fourth indoor high point award in K-State history. Her individual high jump title and high point award are the first since Akela Jones also accomplished the feat at the Big 12 Indoor Championship in 2016.
After placing second in the women's long jump on Friday, Schultz found the top of the podium in the women's high jump, winning her second-career high jump championship with a jump of 1.85m/6-00.75. She cleared her previous personal best height of 1.82m/5-11.50 and the winning height on her first attempt to best Texas Tech's Zarriea Willis. Senior Rhizlane Siba joined Schultz on the podium by placing third overall with a 1.79m/5-10.50.
"I think the biggest battle is always mental. We are physically prepared to come and do well," Schultz said of her performance. "Overcoming mental barriers is always a tough thing to do, but I was prepared to push myself."
Just minutes after winning the high jump, Schultz returned to the women's 60-meter hurdles finals, where she ran a qualifying time of 8.30 in the prelims on Friday. On Saturday, Schultz fought through the finals to finish fourth overall in 8.27, adding five points to her individual point tally.
In the men's high jump, freshman Tejaswin Shankar and junior NaTron Gipson contended for the title, battling with Texas Tech's Trey Culver, who won the event with a jump of 2.31m/7-07, and Oklahoma's Vernon Turner. Shankar had a huge day by clearing his previous personal best of 2.19m/7-02.25, finishing third overall with a jump of 2.28m/7-05.75. Shankar's jump of Saturday bests the indoor Indian National Record that he set earlier this year. Paired with Shankar, Gipson had a solid day by clearing 2.19m/7-02.25 to finish fourth.
With the success in the field events, the Wildcats also put together notable performances on the track, including a pair of podium finishes from senior Terrell Smith. After qualifying for both the men's 60 meters and 200 meters on Friday, Smith tied for fourth in a tightly contested men's 200 meter race in 20.97 and placed sixth in the 60 meters in 6.75.
In the women's 200 meters, senior A'Keyla Mitchell ran a strong race in the finals of the event, where she placed third in 23.68. Mitchell's third-place finish marks the third time she has placed in the top-three in the event at the Big 12 Indoor Championship.
In the distance events, junior Kurt Loevenstein and sophomore Travis Hodge put together a strong showing in the men's 1,000 meters. Loevenstein ran strong throughout the race to finish in third in 2:30.83, while Hodge followed closely behind to place fifth in 2:31.14.
Junior Emma Wren and freshman Cara Melgares also earned a pair of podium finishes in the women's mile, where the duo finished sixth and seventh overall.
Following their showing at the Big 12 Indoor Championship, individuals that place in the top-16 of the NCAA will qualify for the NCAA Championship in College Station Texas on March 9-10. Individual qualifiers for the meet will be named at a later date.
