MANHATTAN, Kan. – After hitting three home runs with 11 RBI in a four-game stretch, junior-college transfer Drew Mount was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Mount's offensive production helped K-State to a 4-1 record last week, including a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning against Virginia Tech to clinch a 6-5 win. The 5-11 outfielder hit two more home runs at Old Dominion over the weekend, where K-State took two of three in Norfolk, Virginia.
The Santa Clara, California, native posted multiple RBI in four straight games, including three, three-RBI games. Mount also scored seven runs, stole three bases and drew five walks for an on-base percentage of .417 and a .789 slugging percentage.
Mount's offensive onslaught propelled him up to second in the conference's rankings in both home runs (tied) and runs batted in. He, along with teammate Will Brennan, are tied for ninth in the league with 15 total bases.
The honor is the first weekly award in Mount's Wildcat career, who is in his first season at K-State after transferring from De Anza College.
After eight games in 10 days away from home, K-State (4-4) will open its 2018 home campaign on Friday, March 2 against La Salle (3-4) at 3 p.m. The home opener will kick off a string of 14 consecutive games at Tointon Family Stadium in the month of March. The entire three-game series with the Explorers will be streamed free at K-StateHD.TV and will be live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
