Feb 28, 2018 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Following a win in the 2017-18 regular season finale at Texas Tech, Kansas State freshman guard Rachel Ranke was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week. This marks the third time this season Ranke has earned the honor, as she picked up her previous two recognitions on November 20 and February 26.
Ranke joins Oklahoma's Shaina Pellington as the only players in the league this season to earn consecutive Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors. Ranke is the first K-State player to garner three or more Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors in a season since the 2013-14 season and just the fourth player in program history to earn three or more Big 12 Freshman of the Week citations.
In Monday night's win at Texas Tech, Ranke set new career-high in points and rebounds. Over the last two games, Ranke is averaging 22.5 points and 5.5 three-point field goals made per game.
Ranke tallied a game-high 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting including a 6-of-13 effort from beyond the arc. She also pulled in seven rebounds and notched two steals against the Lady Raiders. This was her ninth game this season with four or more connections from the 3-point line.
Ranke leads all Big 12 freshmen in 3-point field goals made per game (2.9; 83 3-pt FGs made). Her 83 made 3-point field goals are second in program history among freshmen, behind Laurie Koehn's school record 122 three-point field goals made. She ranks tied for ninth in program history for 3-point field goals made in a season.
The guard from Burnsville, Minnesota, is third among the league's freshmen in scoring (12.1 ppg). Ranke is the first K-State freshman to surpass 350 or more points in her rookie season since the 2013-14 season and is the ninth freshman in program history to score 350 or more points in her rookie season.
With the guidance of fourth year head coach Jeff Mittie, Kansas State (15-14, 7-11 Big 12) is postseason eligible for the fourth straight season. K-State recorded seven Big 12 wins, which marks the fourth straight season K-State has tallied seven or more wins in league play.
K-State, as the No. 8 seed, will face the No. 9 seed Kansas (12-17, 3-15 Big 12) in the first round of the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at Chesapeake Energy Arena with a tip time of 6 p.m. Friday's game will be broadcast on FOX College Sports Central.
Friday's game will also be broadcast on the radio through the K-State Sports Network and for free online at kstatesports.com.
