Wildcats Thrive in Sweep of DeLoss Dodds Invitational
Feb 03, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team used a prolific effort, including 18 event victories, five meet records and a school record to sweep the men's and women's dual scoring against Oklahoma State at this weekend's DeLoss Dodds Invitational.
K-State outscored Oklahoma State in the dual-scoring as the K-State men totaled 84 points to Oklahoma State' 32, and the K-State women outscored the Oklahoma State Cowgirls 87-74. Coming into this weekend's DeLoss Dodds Invitational, both the K-State men's and women's teams ranked in the top-25 of the Track and Field News dual rankings, with the K-State women ranking No. 3 and the K-State men ranking No. 22.
"There were a lot of good things that we got out of this weekend," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said of the team. "Some of it has to do with down the road even, I always have to keep the bigger picture in mind."
The promising performances came throughout the weekend, as senior Mitch Dixon set the school record of 21.68m/71-01.75 in the men's weight throw on Friday evening, while several other athletes, including senior Morgan Wedekind, who competed unattached, senior A'Keyla Mitchell and junior Kurt Loevenstein notched multiple victories in their respective events.
Coming off a school-record breaking performance last weekend at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, senior Terrell Smith added another impressive performance in the 200 meters on Saturday, winning the event in 21.02, while also setting a new meet record.
"There were some really high-quality marks, Terrell [Smith]'s 200 in 21.01 on this track is fast," Rovelto said. "I have been here for 30 years and I have seen a number of Olympians not break 21 [seconds] on this track. That is really good."
In the women's 200 meters, Mitchell also bested a meet record, running a lap around the 200-meter track in 24.17 to top the previous meet record of 24.56 set by Juanita Broaddus set in 2004. Mitchell would make another appearance on the track only several events later to be a part of another meet record in the women's 4x400 meter-relay, where the team of Mitchell, Akia Guerrier, Nina Schultz and Lauren Taubert finished in 3:42.68.
The relay team, led by Taubert's 55.07 split, was the seventh-fasted 4x400 meter relay in K-State women's indoor history.
"We don't give up on each other, no matter what we go through," Mitchell said of her team's performance. "When it comes down to it, each and every one of these individuals have to score for us to win a team title, and we are a family."
After day one of the Steve Fritz men's heptathlon, senior Max Estill entered Saturday's competition in second with 2,817 points. Estill started the second day of competition with personal-best marks in both the men's pentathlon 60-meter hurdles (8.55) and the pentathlon pole vault (3.80m/12-05.50), which led to an indoor-best pentathlon score of 4,900 for the senior. Estill finished third overall in the event, as former Wildcat Reinis Kegers won the heptathlon with a meet-record 5,566 points.
At the conclusion of the men's heptathlon, the field events took over the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, where the Wildcats claimed three event victories. First, in the women's long jump, sophomore Nina Schultz jumped a meet-best 5.97m/19-07 on her first attempt to win the event, followed by fellow Wildcat sophomore Konstantina Romaiou who took the second spot with a jump of 5.63m/18-05.75 in the long jump finals.
In the men's long jump, former K-State stand out Ifeanyi Otuonye led some current Wildcats to P.R.'s on Saturday, as Otuonye won the event with a leap of 7.53m/24-08.50, while sophomore Jullane Walker placed second with a top jump of 7.22m/23-08.25, and freshman Tejaswin Shankar jumped 7.21m/23-08 to place third in his first long jump competition.
The remaining field event victories came in the throwing ring, where junior Brett Neelly and senior Jess St. John won the men's and women's shot-put events. Neelly, a native of Gallatin, Tennessee, set a meet record with a throw of 18.68m/61-03.75 on his fifth throw, while St. John won the women's shot put by over a meter with a personal best throw of 16.18m/53-01. St. John's new mark places her 24th in the NCAA this season.
The Wildcats also continued their success in the distance events, as Loevenstein claimed victories in both the men's 800 meters on Friday, and the 1,000 meters on Saturday. Along with Loevenstein, sophomore Travis Hodge set a new personal best of 4:11.86 in the men's mile to win the event, and freshman Sydney Collins shaved a second off her personal best to win the women's 1,000 Meters in 2:57.15.
Following the weekend's DeLoss Dodds Invitational, the Wildcats will split into two groups next week to compete at the Texas Tech Shootout in Lubbock, Texas, and a group of distance runners will depart for the Gorilla Classic hosted at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburgh, Kansas. Both meets begin on Friday, February 9, and will conclude on Saturday, February 10.
