Schultz Records NCAA Best in Pentathlon at Texas Tech Shootout
Feb 09, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Sophomore Nina Schultz recorded an NCAA indoor season best, and the seventh-best pentathlon score in NCAA indoor history, totaling 4,502 points to win the women's pentathlon at the Texas Tech Shootout on Friday.
"It's definitely exciting, I am happy with the score and the personal best, but anything can happen in the pentathlon and I just need to go out and keep improving and having fun," Schultz said of her performance. "Overall, I felt a lot more relaxed and comfortable out there."
Schultz's historic performance moved her into second in K-State history, behind only Akela Jones' 4,643 points set in 2016, and topped her previous U20 Canadian National Record (4,340) set at the 2017 Indoor NCAA Championships.
"Nina competed well. She ran another sub 8.30 hurdles race, had a personal best in the high jump again, a P.R. in the long jump and a very controlled 800 meters," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "Obviously this is a big score, but I think she can still improve a little in every event."
The outing was put together by a string of prominent performances in the five events, including a quick start to the day in the women's 60-meter hurdles. After setting a personal best in the event last week (8.24), Schultz followed it up on Friday with a first-place finish, coming in at 8.28 to come away with 1,066 points after one event.
With the fast start, the two-time all-American would not slow down. In the second event of the afternoon, she jumped a new personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.82m/5-11.50 to win the event and capture 1,003 points. The mark also placed her 14th in the NCAA this season, which tied a fellow Wildcat, Rhizlane Siba.
Only two events later, Schultz would come through with another standout mark in the women's long jump, where she leaped 6.39m/20-11.75 into the sand-pit, marking the sixth-best jump in the NCAA this season and the third-best in K-State indoor history. It appeared she was headed towards a career-high in the pentathlon with only the 800-meter run remaining.
In the final event of the pentathlon, Schultz possessed 3,676 points to lead the field, while nearing the top pentathlon scores in the NCAA this season. In the first 400 meters, she was placed within the pack of runners before she used a surge to move from fifth to first in the final two laps. Schultz crossed the line with her third personal best of the day, coming in at 2:19.79 to up her pentathlon score to 4,502 points.
Schultz's all-around effort secured her the best mark in the NCAA this season by over 100 points and placed her seventh on the all-time NCAA Indoor Pentathlon list.
Following the eventful women's pentathlon, the Wildcats continued their success into the sprint events, as senior Terrell Smith and sophomore Jullane Walker claimed qualifiers into the men's 60-meter finals.
In the finals, Smith went on to tie his qualifying time of 6.69 which marked a new personal best for the senior, while Walker made a big improvement to record a personal best of 6.72. The showing by the duo moved them into fourth and fifth in the Big 12 this season, respectively, and moved Smith into a tie for third in K-State history, and Walker into sixth in K-State history.
After the conclusion of the Texas Tech Shootout, the distance runners made an appearance at the Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan. Six K-State runners represented the Wildcats in the 5,000-meter run, where senior Colton Donahue finished 10th overall in 14:46.95 in a crowded 5k race. In the women's 5,000-meters senior Kayla Doll ran in section two, where she finished fourth with a time of 17:27.57.
The Wildcats will resume action at the Texas Tech Shootout and Gorilla Classic on Saturday to wrap up the weekend. The Texas Tech Shootout features field events beginning at 12:00 p.m. CT, before running events pick up at 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile, at the Gorilla Classic, the Wildcats will resume action beginning at 4:05 p.m. with the men's mile, before concluding the meet at 5:20 p.m. with the women's 3,000 meters.
