Mar 23, 2018 | Track & Field
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams combined for eight event victories and two facility records, set by sophomore Nina Schultz and senior Janee' Kassanavoid, to highlight day two of the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday.
"We had a very good day. It was a very exciting start for the season," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "We also had a great start to the outdoor season with our throwers. A lot of marks very close to personal bests with veterans and some very good marks from our newcomers."
Kassanavoid threw her record-breaking mark of 65.93m/216-04 on her fourth attempt, breaking former Wildcat Sara Savatovic's meet record of 65.00m/213-03 set at the UTSA Invitational in 2016. Kassanavoid's throw also is the second best in the NCAA this season and her first competition since finishing fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon in 2017.
Schultz continued where she left off on Friday, winning each of her events on the final day of the heptathlon. Schultz got started in the women's long jump, where she leaped 6.15m/20-02.25 to easily win the event. On her next event, the women's javelin, Schultz recorded a best throw of 43.76m/143-07 to win the event and extend her lead.
Entering her final event of the competition, the 800 meters, with 5,281 points and a large lead on the competition, Schultz finished strong with a 2:26.51 to conclude the event with 6,018 points, marking a new meet and facility record of nearly 1,000 points. Schultz's point total puts her at the top of the NCAA early this season, where she nearly topped her personal best of 6,021 set last season at the Jim Click Invitational. Her 6,021 points qualified her for the2017 NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Oregon with the fourth best score in the NCAA.
In the men's decathlon, the pair of juniors, Max Estill and Simone Fassina concluded their weekend of the combined events, where Estill finished third with 6,290 points and Fassina finished fourth with 5,401 points.
Following the conclusion of the combined events, the field events began on Saturday, including the men's weight throw and men's shot put. In the men's weight throw, senior Mitch Dixon got his outdoor season off to a good start, throwing 64.23m/210-09 which won him the event.
