K-State Strong in Season-Opening Roadrunner Invitational
Mar 24, 2018 | Track & Field
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The K-State men's and women's track teams both finished third in their outdoor season debut on Saturday, as the teams posted two meet records and five event victories on the final day of the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
The No. 7 ranked K-State women finished third overall with 148 points, behind only Texas A&M (178.5) and Baylor (151), who finished first and second, respectively. The men's team also placed third with 100 points, as Texas A&M claimed the victory with 168 points and Baylor finished in second with 104 points.
"This was a very high-quality meet for this early in the season," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said of the team. "We had some outstanding opening marks and accomplished a great deal. If we can continue to build on this we will end up being a very solid team."
Of the accomplishments, the Wildcats racked up five events victories and two meet records on Saturday alone. Junior Shadae Lawrence broke the meet and facility record in the women's discus, while freshman Tejaswin Shankar broke the meet and facility record in the men's high jump, while also tying the sixth-best jump in K-State outdoor history.
In her first meet back since winning the NCAA Championship in the discus in 2017, Lawrence returned to the discus circle on Saturday, throwing 61-08m/200-05 on her first attempt, which bested the competition by over five meters to win the event. Freshman Taylor Latimer had a solid outdoor season debut in the discus, where she placed fifth with a throw of 49.01m/16-09.
In the men's high jump, Shankar eased through the first three progressions, before missing his first attempt at 2.25m/7-04.50. He would later clear the bar to notch the event victory, before narrowly missing on 2.30m/7-06.50. Shankar's winning jump of 2.25m/7-04.50 broke the facility record of 2.18m/7-01.75 set in 2017, while also tying for sixth in K-State school history.
Along with the meet records broken on Saturday, the Wildcats had stellar performances across the board, including a sweep in the women's high jump. Freshman Clare Gibson took the field in her K-State outdoor debut with a jump of 1.75m/5-08.75, while senior Rhizlane Siba placed second by also clearing 1.75m/5-08.75. Juniors Shanae McKenzie and Morgan Coffman cleared 1.70m/5-07 to earn third and fourth place finishes, as the Wildcats claimed the top-four spots in the event.
In the men's 1,500 meters, senior Lukas Koch ran an impressive race by clocking a 3:51.76 to easily win the event, while sophomore Travis Hodge also ran a strong race by finishing in second with a personal best of 3:58.46. Following the men's race, the Wildcats were well-represented in the women's 1,500 meters, where senior Morgan Wedekind ran a personal best 4:28.12 to place third, while the five Wildcats in the race, Emma Wren, Kayla Doll, Cara Melgares and Sydney Collins all scored points in the event, totaling 18 points in the race.
Later in the day in the men's 200 meters, the Wildcats got their final event victory of the evening behind an impressive 200-meter race by sophomore Jullane Walker, who ran 21.13 to win the event.
Following the Roadrunner Invitational, the Wildcats will send several runners to the San Francisco Distance Carnival in Hayward, California on March 30-31, while K-State will also send a number of athletes to the Emporia State Open in Emporia, Kansas on March 31.
