Apr 17, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Sophomore Nina Schultz was named the USTFCCCA women's National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday, after scoring a personal-best 6,133 points in the women's heptathlon to earn a silver medal at the XXI Commonwealth Games in Carrara, Australia.
Schultz becomes the first Kansas State athlete to be named National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season and the first Big 12 athlete to win the award since Texas Tech's Hannah Carson won in 2016.
"This was her first major senior championship, so to come away with a medal of any type is pretty special," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said of Schultz's performance.
At the Commonwealth Games, Schultz set four heptathlon personal bests, leading to her personal-best score of 6,133 points, which is second in the world this season.
Schultz got off to a hot start at the Commonwealth Games, and never looked back. The sophomore of New Westminster, Canada set personal bests in her first two events, the 100-meter hurdles (13.47) and the high jump (1.84m/6-00.50) leading to her day one score of 3,639, which put her in second place with three events remaining.
On day two of the heptathlon, Schultz closed out her performance with a silver medal by placing in the top-five of each of her events. In the final event, the women's 800 meters, Schultz paced off Canadian teammate Angela Whyte to secure her podium finish with 6,133 points.
Schultz is no stranger to the podium, earning second-place at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon where she scored 5,959 points. Earlier this season, Schultz took over the NCAA lead in the event, by scoring 6,018 points at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
This week the Wildcats will travel East down I-70 to compete in the Kansas Relays – Quadrangular against Kansas, Nebraska and Harvard. For more information on the Kansas Relays, including a schedule of events, ticket information and more, click here.
