K-State Track Teams Place Third at Kansas Relays
Apr 21, 2018 | Track & Field
LAWRENCE, Kansas – The K-State men's and women's track and field teams each placed third in the team scoring at the Kansas Relays Quadrangular competition, with the No. 11 women scoring 164 points and the men's team scoring a season-high 131 points at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas this weekend.
"We had a few individuals who performed well given where they are in training, but we had quite a few not perform as they should," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "There were some logistical issues and the weather wasn't the greatest, but we should still give a better effort.
The Quadrangular competition, consisting of K-State, Kansas, Nebraska and Harvard, spanned throughout four days of competition, where the Wildcats tallied 12 event victories. In the men's competition, Nebraska claimed the title with 209 points, while the Kansas women's team also won the competition with 209 points.
Of the dozen event victories for the Wildcats, senior Terrell Smith accounted for 18 points to tie for the most in the men's quadrangular with Kansas' Barton Adams. Smith a native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, got started with a 10.36 to easily win the men's 100 meters, where he was followed by junior Nick Albus, who placed third in 10.66.
Later in the day, Smith returned to the track in the men's 200 meters, where he put together another event-winning performance of 21.05. Sophomore Jullane Walker also placed in the men's 200 meters for the Wildcats, finishing in third in 21.19.
In the distance events, the Wildcats claimed a pair of victories in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Reigning Big 12 Outdoor Champion in the event, Morgan Wedekind improved upon her personal best time set at the Big 12 Championship at Rock Chalk Park last season, by running a 10:08.36 to win the event on Saturday. Freshman Cara Melgares rounded out the race for the Wildcats, finishing second with a new personal best of 10:44.16, as the Wildcats earned 16 points in the event.
In the men's steeplechase, senior Colton Donahue remained at the front of the pack throughout the race, before ultimately pulling away with the victory in 9:19.14. Donahue's time marks a season-best in the event as he improved upon the 9:35.37 he ran last weekend at the Texas Invitational.
On Friday, Shaelyn Ward, Ashley Petr and Taylor Latimer took to the women's hammer throw, where all three Wildcats placed in the top-five of the event. Ward, a freshman from Sapulpa, Oklahoma, got the Wildcats off to a great start by throwing a personal best throw of 56.77m/186-03 to win the event. Petr went on to place third with a personal best of her own, throwing 54.71m/179-06.
After placing fourth in the women's hammer throw on Friday, Latimer also competed in the women's shot put and discus events, where the freshman set a new personal best and won the women's shot put with a throw of 15.42m/50-07.25. Latimer's personal best comes on the heels of winning the women's shot put at the Texas Invitational a week ago, with a throw of 14.90m/48-10.75.
In the men's 1,500 meters, senior Lukas Koch ran a convincing 3:51.83 to win the race, while junior Kurt Loevenstein fought to the front of the pack to finish second behind Koch in 3:56.49.
Next week, the Wildcats will split for the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on April 25-28 and the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout on April 27. The Wildcats will then host their sole outdoor meet of the season, as K-State hosts the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 5. For more information on the Ward Haylett Invitational, click here.
