Wildcats Post Historic Results at Drake Relays, Texas Tech
Apr 27, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Represented in three different meets across the country this weekend, the Kansas State track and field teams posted historic results at the 109th Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee in Des Moines, Iowa and the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout in Lubbock, Texas on Friday.
"We had a number of personal bests and some really solid performances," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said.
At the Drake Relays, the women's 4x1600-meter relay team of Emma Wren, Cara Melgares, Sydney Collins and Morgan Wedekind won the event for the first time in program history at the meet, running 19:22.42, which is just short of the program record 19.19.48 set by Sara Stoakes, Boglarka Bozzay, Martina Tresch and Beverly Ramos in 2010.
"That was one of the most impressive performances that I have seen in coaching," Assistant Coach Ryun Godfrey said of the race. "It was windy, but our girls were determined and fought really hard. Each of them ran very well and they left it all on the track."
Wren began the relay for the Wildcats as the opening leg, where she positioned the Wildcats behind Minnesota through four laps. Wren then handed the baton to Melgares, who was able to create distance between her and the field when she pulled ahead after her second lap around the track
After the second exchange, Collins was contested by Iowa State's Cailie Logue on the backstretch of her final lap but was able to pull ahead of the Cyclones to give the Wildcats the lead heading into the last leg. Wedekind received the baton from Collins for the final leg and she never looked back as the Wildcats were able to run away with their first 4x1600 meter relay victory in Drake Relays history.
Across the country in Lubbock, Texas, K-State was also in action at the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout, where the Wildcats put together a series of impressive marks, including a new Indian National Record from freshman Tejaswin Shankar.
Shankar, a native of New Delhi, India, was able to surpass his previous record of 2.28m/7-05.75, which he previously set earlier this year at the 22nd Indian Federation Cup, by clearing an NCAA-leading mark of 2.29m/7-06 to win the event. Shankar entered at 2.11m/6-11, clearing each of his first three heights. Shankar's only miss of the night came on his first attempt at 2.25m/7-04.50, before clearing the height and advancing to a new personal best of 2.29m/7-06. Shankar's mark is also the sixth best in school history and the sixth best jump in the world this season.
"TJ [Tejaswin Shankar] had a PR but honestly I do not think he jumped exceptionally well," Rovelto said. "This is a big positive because when he puts it all together he will do something special."
Also making history, junior Brett Neelly closed in on Andy Gillam's shot put school record on Friday, as Neelly threw 19.59m/64-03.25 to mark the third-best throw in K-State school history. Gilliams school record of 19.69m/64-07.25 has held since 1985.
In the women's hammer throw, senior Janee' Kassanavoid and the women's hammer throwers continued an impressive season for the Wildcats, where Kassanavoid neared her school record set earlier this year by throwing 67.38m/221-00 to win the event. Sophomore Helene Ingvaldsen also improved upon her personal best by throwing 64.42m/211-04 to improve upon the fourth-best throw in K-State outdoor history.
Also, at the Drake Relays, senior Kayla Doll improved upon her personal best in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a 10:18.76 to place third in the event. Doll's previous personal best was set at the 2017 Big 12 Championship, where she ran 10:21.53 to place fifth.
To close out the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout, the K-State women's 4x400 meter relay team of Lauren Taubert, A'Keyla Mitchell, Nina Schultz and Ariel Okorie ran an impressive 3:38.50 to win the event.
In total, the No. 13 ranked K-State women's team tallied 119 points to finish behind Texas Tech (218 pts.) and Nebraska (200 pts.), while the K-State men's team placed fourth with 98 points, behind Texas Tech (213.5 pts.), Nebraska (206.5 pts.) and Wichita State (112 pts.).
Next up, the Wildcats will return home to host the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 5 in Manhattan, Kansas, as the team gears up for the Big 12 Championship on May 11-13. Admission to the Ward Haylett Invitational is free, with events getting started at 11:00 a.m. CT.
