Apr 28, 2018 | Track & Field
DES MOINES, Iowa – Members of the Kansas State track and field team wrapped up an impressive weekend of action at the 109th Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, as the Wildcats posted several personal bests and top finishes throughout the weekend.
The K-State women's 4x1600 meter relay highlighted the Drake Relays for the Wildcats, winning the event for the first time in school history. The team comprised of Emma Wren, Cara Melgares, Sydney Collins and Morgan Wedekind claimed the event victory in 19:22.42 on Friday, falling just short of the school record time of 19:19.48 set in 2010.
"The women's 1,600-meter relay definitely sticks out and so does Kurt Loevenstein's 800 meters," Assistant Coach Ryun Godfrey said of the K-State performances. "Overall we had a lot of good races and I am happy with how we did."
The Wildcats continued their success on the track on Saturday, where junior Kurt Loevenstein ran a personal best time of 1:50.09 in the men's 800 meters to place third in the event. Loevenstein bests his previous best of 1:51.53 set earlier this season at the Jim Click Shootout.
In the relay events on Saturday, the women's distance medley relay team of Wedekind, Victoria Robinson, Doll and Melgares placed seventh in the event, crossing the finish line in 11:39.29.
In the men's distance medley relay, the team of Travis Hodge, Noah Stevenson, Lukas Koch and Colton Donahue placed 10th overall in 10:10.10. Saturday's distance medley relay was the first time this season the Wildcats have competed in the event.
Earlier in the week on Thursday, senior Kayla Doll also improved upon her personal best in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, where she ran 10:18.76 to beat her time of 10:21.53 set at the Big 12 Championship in 2017. Doll placed fifth at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in 2017 and looks to keep improving into this year's Big 12 Championship.
In total, the Wildcats placed in the top-five eight times at the Drake relays this week, including top-five individual performances from Loevenstein, Koch, Doll and Donahue. Moving forward, the Wildcats will compete at the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 5 in Manhattan, Kansas, before competing in the Big 12 Outdoor Championship on May 11-13 in Waco, Texas.
