Nina Schultz Named 2017 Canadian U20 Athlete of the Year
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Following a breakout freshman campaign that included Canadian U20 records in the heptathlon and pentathlon K-State sophomore Nina Schultz has been named the 2017 Canadian U20 Athlete of the Year, the Canadian Athletics Federation announced on Thursday.
Â
The award recognizes a historic freshman season near the end of a sophomore campaign that has continued Schultz' explosive collegiate track debut. Last year was highlighted by her 6,018 points in the women's heptathlon at the Jim Click Combined Events on April 7, 2017, where she set a new Canadian U20 record and became the youngest Canadian ever to score over 6,000 points in the heptathlon. Schultz followed up her record-breaking performance by finishing second at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she scored 5,959 points.
Â
Schultz's versatile abilities also allowed her to earn Big 12 High Point Award Honors at the 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Championship, where she led the Wildcats to their first Big 12 Championship since 2002, while claiming an individual title in the women's high jump.
Â
In addition to her record-breaking outdoor season, Schultz shined during her first indoor season where she set the Canadian U20 Indoor record in the women's pentathlon by scoring 4,340 points at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas.
Â
Schultz's freshman year was amongst the greatest in school history, ranking in the top-four in K-State school history in both the heptathlon (third) and the pentathlon (fourth).
Â
This season, Schultz continued her success in the combined events where she scored a personal-best 6,133 points in the heptathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, earning silver. Schultz is a two-time Big 12 Champion in the women's high jump and already a four-time All-American during her career as a Wildcat.
Â
Schultz looks to add another chapter to her storied career at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the women's heptathlon in Eugene, Oregon from June 6-9. Schultz enters the meet with the third-best heptathlon score this season (6,018 pts.), recorded at the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout earlier this year.
