K-State's Isaac Qualifies for US Women's Amateur
Jul 03, 2018 | Women's Golf
SUGARLAND, Texas – K-State sophomore Reid Isaac factored in several things – like a Tuesday mid-term, among others – when planning for a busy summer. She'll have to adjust a bit, and doesn't mind at all, after qualifying for the 2018 US Women's Amateur Championship with a third-place finish at a regional qualifying event at Sweetwater Country Club in the Houston area Monday.
Isaac, who finished her freshman campaign with the team's third-best scoring average (75.36) and the squad's top freshman average, used a pair of birdies on the last 10 holes en route to an even-par 71 and by finishing among the top-six, earned a spot in the 2018 US Women's Amateur field on The Golf Club of Tennessee, August 6-12.
"It feels awesome," Isaac said in the midst of prepping for a geology midterm scheduled for noon. "I made my summer plans, not adding the Women's Am into my schedule, so to have to clear some stuff out to go is a good feeling. I haven't been performing as well the last couple months so to see the benefit of all the hard work I'm putting in feels good."
The qualifying finish capped a strong couple weeks of golf for Isaac, who won the Trinity Forest Invitational while leading K-State to a team crown last October before falling off her scorching pace a bit during the spring semester. Isaac was five over through 12 holes to open the Texas Women's Stroke Play Championship (June 21) with a 76 but improved in each round – even-par 72 in the second and 2-under 70 in the third – to climb into the top five.
"I had a really rough first nine of the tournament," Isaac, a native of Montgomery, Texas, said. "I told myself you need to turn this around, it's time to show what you've been working hard for. I was playing against girls I've played junior golf with all my life, it felt good to show myself and everyone else how hard I've been working."
Isaac will participate in the 97th WTGA State Amateur Championship at San Antonio Country Club, July 17-20, before travelling to Tennessee. During the 2017-18 campaign, Isaac was part of a young nucleus that was fifth nationally in Golfstat's Freshman Impact Rankings. K-State had three freshmen play in all 10 regular season events and four contribute to the scoring lineup regularly. The Wildcats add two more talented frosh to the mix with Briony Bayles and Heather Fortushniak joining the team in the fall.
