SE: Report Day Marks the Beginning of K-State Football’s 2018 Season

A white piece of paper. This is how each K-State football season begins.
On Thursday, 100-plus Wildcats carried around this piece of paper for report day. They traversed up and down the Vanier Family Football Complex, gathering eight signatures on their sheet like they were on a scavenger hunt. All of it served as a precursor to Friday's first fall practice and the start of the 2018 season, roughly four weeks away.
"It's about to get crazy," Spencer Misko said, as he prepared to have his picture taken in the Steel and Pipe Theatre of Vanier.
Some of his teammates started their day right there, in the picture room and possibly the place with the most entertainment, for their first signature.
Most of the pictures were meant for newcomers or to update headshots for those who had not taken one in a few years. Some Wildcats simply wanted to take a new one, however. One player reasoned for a new one because he just got a haircut. Another asked for one because "I look like I'm 12 in the old one."
Before flashing a smile to the camera, many Wildcats checked their hair with their phones to make sure their headshots for the website and game programs looked sharp. Osvelt Joseph did not need a mirror, however. "I know I look good," Joseph, a senior, said with a smile.
A few other Wildcats lightly heckled their teammates during pictures. Colby Moore prodded Dalton Schoen by yelling, "Smile! Throw a little pipe up!" to loosen his younger teammate up.
Teamwork was also on full display in the room. Wildcats helped each other in and out of their skintight jerseys for pictures. One pair even fixed each other's ties before the look became permanent, or at least until next year's report day.
One signature came after getting their dorm room assignments. Throughout the day, players questioned each other on who was rooming with who for the next week-plus for fall camp.
Another signature came from their academic counselors on Vanier's second floor. There, they went over a few items like their progress toward graduating or to wrap up any summer school-related questions. A few feet away, players filled out compliance paperwork in the academic center's computer lab to receive another signature.
Down another level, on Vanier's bottom floor, there were a number of stops for the Wildcats.
They all picked up a backpack filled with new workout gear in the equipment room. Some were fitted for helmets and shoulder pads. At least one Wildcat gave the equipment staff a thunderous "thank you" for an extra-long practice jersey he wanted this season.
On the same floor, the Wildcats stopped by the strength and conditioning room. They also went to see K-State's athletic training staff. At the latter, the Wildcats filled out plenty of paperwork and had some of their vitals checked before moving on.
Once the Wildcats finished their eight stops, the rest of the day consisted of meetings before heading to dorms. Here, the Wildcats enjoyed their last night of sleep before their first practice of 2018.
"Today's the start of the whirlwind," senior Dalton Risner said. "I'm ready to go. I'm ready to rock and roll."
