MANHATTAN, Kan. – Megan Kurey, a former Georgia Tech standout and volunteer assistant coach, has been hired as K-State assistant tennis coach, as announced by head coach Jordan Smith Friday.
After a decorated four-year career with the Yellow Jackets, Kurey comes to K-State after spending the 2017-18 season as Georgia Tech's volunteer assistant coach, where Georgia Tech made a run to the national semifinal as the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
"We are so glad to have Megan join our K-State tennis family," Smith said. "Megan has been a part of a lot of recent success at Georgia Tech, as a player and coach. Having someone on staff with her background will be instrumental for the program, especially as we continue to move forward and achieve higher goals. She's going to be a valuable asset in the overall development of our student-athletes, on and off the court."
"I would like to thank Coach Smith, Jill Shields, Scott Garrett and the rest of the K-State Athletic Department for giving me this opportunity," said Kurey. "The community and atmosphere here create a special place to develop student-athletes, on and off the court. I am so excited to be a part of it and to work alongside Coach Smith on building this program to reach its full potential."
In her lone season as Georgia Tech's volunteer assistant, Kurey helped the Yellow Jackets go 27-6 (12-2 ACC) and finish in a tie for second place in the ACC standings. Georgia Tech ended the 2018 season as the fifth-ranked team in the ITA rankings and had three singles players ranked in the top 100, led by Paige Hourigan at No. 12.
Under Kurey's tutelage, Hourigan, along with doubles partner Kenya Jones, finished the regular season as the No. 1 doubles tandem in the country. The duo of Ida Jarlskog and Victoria Flores ended the year as the 68th-ranked doubles team.
Kurey's playing accolades include being named a 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American in doubles, a 2013 USTA/ITA Indoor National Doubles Championship along with being a two-time team captain.
In February 2014, Kurey and doubles partner Kendal Woodard climbed to the top of the ITA rankings. The duo went on to earn ITA All-America honors as well as Second Team All-ACC accolades after finishing the 2013-14 season 27-11, earning a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Doubles Championships.
Kurey and Woodard claimed the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Doubles Championship in the fall of 2013.
Kurey finished her collegiate career with a 57-30 record in doubles (38-16 dual) and a 53-34 mark in singles (35-23 dual). She was a three-time Academic All-ACC selection.
A native of Roswell, Georgia, Kurey graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in business administration in May 2016 and recently completed her master's degree from Georgia State in Sport Administration.
