K-State Picks Up Three Singles Wins at Big 5 Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Kansas State women's tennis team competed in the second round of the Big 5 Challenge at Baynard H. Friedman Tennis Center Friday, picking up three singles victories on the day.
Wildcat sophomore Maria Linares picked up her first win of the year as she overtook Virgina's Amber O'Dell, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (12). She was followed by freshman Maria Ponomareva, who picked up her first victory at K-State on Friday night, defeating Virgina's Maya Das, 6-3, 6-2.
Italian sophomore Anna Turco joined Linares and Ponomareva, as she won over Camille Favero from UVA, 7-5, 6-3.
Junior Ines Mesquita lost to the Cavaliers' Chole Gullickson 6-3, 6-2. Mesquita is now 34-18 for her career singles record. French sophomore Margot Decker, who is ranked No. 111 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), lost her first match of the season to No. 90 Meghan Kelley, 6-0, 6-3.
In her first singles match as a Wildcat, freshman Ioana Gheorghita fell to the Virginia's Hunter Bleser, 6-3, 6-3. Sofia Munera-Sanchez from UVA overtook sophomore Rosanna Maffei, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5). The Wildcats finished the day 3-4 in singles action.
The Cats, who went 0-3 on Thursday after going up against three doubles pairings from Arizona State, concluded Friday going 0-2 against a pair of Virginia doubles teams.
The duo of Mesquita and Turco fell 4-6 to UVA's Kelley and Gullickson while K-State's freshman tandem of Gheorghita and Ponomareva dropped a 5-7 decision to Bleser and O'Dell.
The Cats continue the four-day event in Fort Worth with a mix of singles and doubles action Saturday. K-State begins play at either 2:30 or 4 p.m., pending on weather. Fans can find live updates and results during the tournament on the team's official Twitter page @KStateTEN.
