BLOOMINGTON, Ind.?– Sophomore Anna Turco found victory in singles, and yet again in doubles with junior Ines Mesquita on Friday, after they played the first day of the Hoosier Fall Classic in Bloomington, Indiana, at the IU Tennis Center.
"It was mixed day for us. We probably didn't have our best showing in singles, we started slow and didn't do well enough playing to our strengths," head coach Jordan Smith said. "I thought Anna Turco did well to win not playing her best. I'm happy that our doubles did well today. We finished the day strong with a couple of wins, but we need to come out with more energy tomorrow and build the points."
Turco began the day by defeating Indiana's Olga Zavarotnaya in singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). Shortly after, she switched over to doubles play where her and Mesquita won both rounds on Friday.
In the first round, Mesquita and Turco overcame Ellie Desmarais and Lesley Foe of Marquette, 8-3. They then went on to face Michelle McKamey and Somer Henry of Indiana in Round 2, winning, 8-7 (7-5).
Mesquita went up against Ohio State's Mary Beth Hurley in singles, but ultimately fell, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Ioana Gheroghita lost to Louisville's Nikolina Jovic during the first round of singles, 6-3, 6-2. Indiana's Madison Appel also won over freshman Maria Ponomareva, 6-3, 3-0 before retirement.
Western Michigan's Melina Lyubomirova and Femke Tjon-A-Joe defeated Gheroghita and Ponomareva during their first round of doubles, 8-3. The duo did not compete in the second round.
The second day of the Hoosier Fall Classic will continue Saturday, starting with doubles at 10:30 a.m. and singles at 12 p.m.
Also on Saturday, sophomores Margot Decker and Maria Linares will begin competition at the ITA All-America Championships in Pacific Palisades, California. Linares is set to compete at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday against Pepperdine's Adrjana Lekaj, while Decker will be seen going into action at 4 p.m. against Anna Vrbenska from Ole Miss.
