K-State Tennis Picks Up Multiple Victories on Saturday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.?– The Kansas State women's tennis picked up multiple victories during the second day of the Hoosier Fall Classic on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Indiana.
Junior Ines Mesquita had the first win of the day, over Indiana's Caitlin Bernard, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Anna Turco also won her singles match against Louisville's Raven Neely, 6-4, 6-1.
Indiana's Madison Appel defeated K-State freshman Ioana Gheroghita, 6-3, 6-1, to end singles actions for the Cats.
The duo of Gheorgita and freshman Maria Ponomareva got a win in the third doubles match of the event over Cincinnati's Antonella Bramato and Alexia Coutino, 8-7 (8-6). In the same round, Turco and Mesquita lost against Caitlin Bernard and Natalie Whalen from Indiana, 8-3.
However, in the duo's fourth match, Turco and Mesquita struck luck when they defeated Ohio State's Mary Beth Hurley and Emma Decoste, 8-4. Ponomareva and Gheorgita lost in the fourth round to Middle Tennessee's Costanza Magazzini and Luisa Zirili, 8-5.
The third and final day of the Hoosier Fall Classic will resume on Sunday, as all four Wildcats will play one singles match, beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT.
Also on Saturday, sophomores Margot Decker and Maria Linares participated in the ITA All-America Championship on Saturday in Pacific Palisades, California. Decker lost to No. 122 Anna Vrbenska from Ole Miss, 6-4, 6-3, while Linares lost to Pepperdine's Adrjana Lekaj, 6-1, 3-0 before retirement.
Decker went on to play a singles match in the back draw of the pre-qualifying singles bracket, defeating the ITA's 77th-ranked player in Georgia's Morgan Coppoc, 6-4, 4-1, ret.
The pair also played together in the doubles pre-qualifying draw, falling to Texas' Spasojevic and Perez Mur, 8-6.
