K-State Women Victorious at Vic Godfrey Open

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's cross country team came out victorious at the Vic Godfrey Open at Wayne E. Dennehl Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, as the Wildcats finished first with 61 points behind three individuals in the top 10, including a second-place finish by sophomore Cara Melgares.
"Both teams gave a great effort today," head coach Ryun Godfrey said of the team's performance on Saturday. "The women's team put together a nice race. Our top three are experienced and they raced very well. (Sophomore) Kassidy Johnson continues to impress, and (freshman) Karley Larson ran much better this week."
In addition to Melgares' second-place finish in 18:15.2, junior Sydney Collins placed fourth overall in 18:22.2 and senior Emma Wren placed sixth in 18:32.1. Rounding out the K-State lineup, sophomore Kassidy Johnson placed 13th in 19:08.2, followed by freshman Karley Larson (36th, 19:50.8), junior Anna Keeley (46th, 20:11.6) and sophomore Victoria Robinson (60th, 20:56.6)
The K-State women's winning performance comes just one week after placing second at the JK Gold Classic in Augusta, Kansas, where Wren, Melgares and Collins all placed in the top-10, while Johnson impressed with a personal-best effort of 14:55.3, which placed her 11th overall.
In the men's 8k race, senior Joe Gorthy led the Wildcats to a third-place team finish with 114 points. Gorthy, who has been the top Wildcat in each of the two races this season, finished fourth overall in 25:46.8. Along with Gorthy, redshirt freshman Jackson Schroeder placed in the top-10 overall, running a 25:50.6 to place sixth.
Coming off a victory at the JK Gold Classic last weekend, the K-State men's team put together another solid performance on Saturday, as freshmen Cooper Schroeder (18th, 26:21.4) and Charlie Parrish (31st, 26:39.3) were among the top-five Wildcat finishers. In addition, junior Kurt Loevenstein placed 65th in 27:34.6, while redshirt freshman Dylan Brenneman (73rd, 27:46.2) and sophomore Noah Stevenson (74th, 27:46.7) finished together also placed in the top-75 overall.
The Wildcats will return to competition on September 29 at the Rim Rock Collegiate Classic in Lawrence, Kansas, as K-State makes their second appearance of the season in the Sunflower State. The Rim Rock Collegiate Classic marks the third meet of the season, as the Wildcats continue to prepare for the Big 12 Championships on October 26.
