– For the second time in her career, Katie Brand was named Division I All-Midwest Region First Team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Brand, a redshirt junior, is the first K-State setter and just the third student-athlete in program history to earn all-region first team honors twice in a career, joining Kaitlynn Pelger (2011-12) and Nataly Korobkova (2007-08). Brand was voted all-region first team last year, making her only the second Wildcat sophomore to earn the honor.

A native of Grand Island, Nebraska, Brand ended this regular season as the only player in Division I to average 11.0 assists, 3.0 digs, 1.2 kills, 0.75 blocks, and 0.10 aces. Her averages in assists, digs, kills, and points (1.76) were all career-highs. She also had a Big 12-best 20 double-doubles, which matched her career-best set just a year ago.

She finished the season with 1,188 assists, 320 digs, 133 kills, 79 blocks and 14 aces. Her personal-best 188.5 points were the most by a Wildcat setter since 2007 while she is the only player in school history to post back-to-back campaigns of 1,000 assists, 300 digs and 100 kills.

Brand is currently sixth in career assists (3,518) and third in career double-doubles (51) in program history.

Brand has earned several honors this year, including All-Big 12 First Team, CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, Academic All-Big 12 First Team, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, Varney’s Invitational MVP, and Creighton Classic All-Tournament Team. She, along with teammate Kersten Kober, is currently up for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, which will be announced on Thursday.

As a result of earning all-region first team accolades, Brand is now in consideration for All-America honors. Those will be announced by the AVCA on December 16.

Brand is one of 14 student-athletes named to this year’s All-Midwest Region First Team. Six other athletes received honorable mention. There are 40 schools in the Midwest region, with K-State being one of four schools from the Big 12 (Iowa State, KU, West Virginia).

Head coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

A total of 20 Wildcats have garnered 29 all-region honors in program history, including 19 selections under head coach Suzie Fritz.

K-State (17-12, 9-7 Big 12) completed the 2015 campaign with its 16th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and tied for fourth in the Big 12 standings.
