Castellano Places Third, Garcia Navas Earns Third Win in K-State Debut

NORMAN, Okla. – Sara Castellano and Ana Garcia Navas tallied three wins each over the weekend as the Wildcats closed out play in the OU Invite at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Castellano defeated TCU’s Alexis Pereria, 6-2, 6-3, to take third place in the Boomer Draw. With the victory over the Big 12 opponent, the redshirt sophomore moved to 3-1 in singles on the weekend and 12-6 in her Wildcat career.

In an extra match of the Sooner draw, Garcia Navas beat Olaya Garrido-Rivas, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, to capture her third straight win. In her first college tournament, the native of Spain ended the weekend with a 3-1 record.

Doubles partners Iva Bago and Carolina Costamagna also won three of their four matches over the weekend, beating Anastasiya Shestikova and Agustina Valenzuela of North Texas, 6-4, then defeating Tulsa’s Saana Saarteinen and Renata Kuricova, 6-4, on Sunday.

Castellano and Stretton took down Aleksandra Zenovka and Olaya Garrido-Rivas from TCU, 6-4, to earn their first doubles victory of the weekend.

For K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg, the improvement in doubles on the final day stood out.

“Doubles did a lot better today and considering the fact we did not get much time to work on doubles, we are definitely happy with our showing,” explained Steinberg. “The fall is all about working on specific things, getting tougher and finding our limits. I think we all did a great job at that this weekend and each girl pushed herself and improved.”

Livia Cirnu also earned a singles victory on the final day of action, defeating Mary Wright of SMU, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, in an extra match in the Stoops Draw.

This weekend helped coach Steinberg figure out what the team needs to do to continue progressing throughout the season.

“This tournament showed us what we all need to work on,” said Steinberg. “We have two weeks before our next tournament, which gives us a great opportunity to work on specific things and improve further.”

K-State will play next Oct. 9-11 in Dallas, Texas at the SMU Fall Tournament.
