Cats Enter Final Round in Fifth Place

MOBILE, Ala. – Backed by a pair of 2-under par rounds by senior Kyle Weldon and junior Matt Green, the Kansas State men’s golf team climbed five spots in the team standings with a 4-under par 284 over the second 18 holes at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Monday at Magnolia Gross Crossings Golf Course.

The Wildcats carded a 5-over par 293 in the first round Monday morning before sinking 13 total birdies in the second round to make their move up the leaderboard. K-State will enter the final round in fifth place at 1-over par 577.

“Our ball striking was really solid today,” said Coach Grant Robbins. “We just did not make enough putts and we did not do a very good job on the last few holes when we had a chance to finish off a low round, but I am still very proud with how we competed.”

“We are in a good spot going into tomorrow. The conditions look to be pretty tough, so we have to stay patient and be focused on every shot.”

Weldon paced the Wildcats with six birdies in his second round, bettering his 2-over par 74 effort from the first 18 holes. Weldon’s 36-hole score of 144 is tied for 18th alongside Green, who picked up an eagle to go with two birdies and 13 pars in his second round. Weldon and Green’s congruent finishes helped them jump 20 spots in the individual rankings after the first round.

Junior Jack Rickabaugh entered the clubhouse having made five pars and a birdie to end his second round at even-par. With a 1-over first round, Rickabaugh is tied for 23rd overall at 1-over par 145. Sophomore Trent Evans is in a tie for 26th at 2-over 146 despite carding seven total birdies, including three in a row from holes 6-8 in the first round.

In only his second tournament as a Wildcat, freshman Andrew Beckler shot an even-par 72 to start the day, which led K-State’s scoring lineup after the first round. Beckler finished his second round at 7-over par in a tie for 60th place.

Auburn carries an eight-stroke lead over second-place Chattanooga entering Tuesday’s final round after carding a 16-under par 560. The Tigers have three golfers within the top-five after 36 holes, including leader Michael Johnson, whose 10-under par 134 included 12 birdies on the day.

At the nearby Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course, the Wildcats’ Connor Knabe carded a 3-over 145 to hold down 10th place in the USA Individual Tournament. Knabe, a junior, finished the first 18-holes at even par to lead K-State.

Junior Hank Simpson sits alone in 11th with his 4-over par 146, while freshman Roland Massimino is close behind in a tie for 12th after his 2-over and 3-over rounds scored him a 147. Sophomore Oscar Spolander recorded a 7-over par first round but bounced back with an even-par second round to enter the final round in 17th place.

The final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate and the USA Individual Tournament will begin Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. (CT). Live results can be followed on www.golfstat.com, while results will be posted at www.k-statesports.com at the conclusion of the round.
