Cats Have Three in the Top 20 After Second Round

BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Kansas State men’s golf team carded a 9-under par 279 on Saturday, jumping two spots on the leaderboard to third place during the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par 72, 7,360-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

Freshman Jeremy Gandon, sophomore Oscar Spolander and senior Kyle Weldon lead the Wildcats as they are in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard.

“It was a good day for us,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “The conditions were perfect for scoring and our guys really took advantage of it. I am especially proud of our freshmen, Jeremy and Roland. Roland played the entire round without a bogey and Jeremy had one of the best-ball striking rounds I have seen in a long time. It is only one round, but it shows what we are capable of.”

Gandon notched five birdies on the front nine and added one more on the back to card a 5-under par 67 and put him in a tie for fifth with a two-day total 5-under par 139. Spolander carded a 3-under par 69 to sit in a tie for ninth and bring him to a two-day total 3-under par 141. Weldon fired a 1-over par 73 to sit in a tie for 19th at 1-under par 143 after day two.

Massimino carded a 2-under par 70, improving on yesterday’s round by six strokes. The freshman holds a two-round total of 2-over par 146, which puts him in a tie for 30th. Green rounded out the Wildcat lineup with a two-round total 8-over par 152, putting him in a tie for 57th.

Host school Iowa jumped two spots and leads the field at 19-under par 557. Iowa’s Raymond Knoll is the top overall performer after the second round with an 11-under par 133.

“We are looking forward to playing in the last group tomorrow. It will be a great experience for our team,” Robbins said.
