Cats Open Big 12 Play at Arrowhead
THE SCORES Kansas State (2-0): K-State 31, UCLA 22; K-State 48, Missouri State 24. Iowa State (1-1): ISU 27, Northern Illinois 10; Iowa 35, Iowa State 7 UPDATING MR. THOMAS: Daniel Thomas is at 1,636 yards through 14 games to rank No. 10 in K-State history. On Thomas' talents compared to past K-State greats, Bill Snyder said, "I don't know that there's a capacity to make the comparison, other than to say he certainly could be right at the top. It's a hard question to answer. We've had some very, very fine players at the running back position and other positions as well. But he certainly wouldn't take a backseat to anyone." Next in line on the all-time rushing charts is Cornelius Davis, who totaled 1,873 yards during a three-year career from 1966-68. SNYDER LIKES DISTRIBUTION: Through two games, Brodrick Smith has nine catches, Aubrey Quarles eight and Tramaine Thompson five. One who likes that distribution is Bill Snyder, who said, "I think you could put them in a pot and shake them up because they all perform at about the same level. I think it makes it more difficult for the defense than when there is one go-to guy." DID YOU KNOW: Today, Sept. 18, 2010, will mark the second earliest start to a Big 8/12 season. The only earlier start came in the Big 12's first ever game on Aug, 31, 1996, when the Wildcats hosted Texas Tech. While K-State is the designated home team, the Wildcats will be playing outside of Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the 11th time in the last 12 years to open Big 12 play. QUOTEABLE QUOTE: Here's Kansas State kicker Anthony Cantele on scoring a touchdown off a fake field goal last week, but then missing the extra point. "That was a bad one. I got a little too cocky, thinking I was the man - you know - scoring the touchdown. Going out and missing the extra point kind of dampened everything." FOR THE RECORD: "Sports Extra" chased down K-State legend Veryl Switzer to see if he ever scored a touchdown and followed with an extra-point kick, and the answer was, "No, that's something I never did." So, Cantele could have perhaps had an all-time, all-time K-State record ... had he only not become "a little too cocky" after scoring the first touchdown of his life at any level. WHO WILL KICK TODAY: Snyder said it would be a "10:28" decision prior to the 11 a.m. kickoff. "It's pretty competitive," Snyder said of the battle between kickers Cantele and Josh Cherry. BY THE NUMBERS 3-0 - The last time the Wildcats opened a season 3-0 was in 2006. 5 - ISU was one of the most improved teams last year when it went from two wins in 2008 to seven wins in 2009. 10 - K-State received 10 votes in this week's AP Top 25 poll. 22 - Tysyn Hartman will be making his 22nd consecutive start, which is high on the K-State team. 24 - ISU is 8-0 under Paul Rhoads when holding teams to under 24 points and 0-7 when the opposition scores more than 224 points. 44 - K-State quarterbacks have put the ball in the air 44 times without an interception.
