‘Cats Split at WSU J.K. Gold Classic Duals

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State cross country team recorded a split on Saturday at the WSU J.K. Gold Classic Duals, as both the men’s and women’s teams defeated Oral Roberts but fell to host Wichita State.

The men’s squad topped the Golden Eagles by a score 16-43 and fell to the Shockers 15-47. The women defeated ORU, 19-40, and fall to the Shockers by a score of 15-47.

“Bottom line is we need to keep working hard and be able to push through the tough moments of the race,” head coach Ryun Godfrey said. “Our mental toughness is still not where it needs to be yet.”

Sophomore Mady Nestor was the top performer for the Wildcats on the women’s side, placing eighth with a time of 14.59.5. Freshman Amanda Thate also performed well in her first race, finishing 10th with a time of 15.13.4.

“Mady ran much better than she did this past Tuesday,” Godfrey said. “Thate also went out hard. I admire her courage. For a freshman in her first race, it was a good effort.”

On the men’s side, junior Kain Ellis finished eighth after finishing his race in a time of 19.18.3. Fellow junior Brett Bachman placed 12th with a time of 19:31.8 to improve upon his performance at the Bob Timmons Invitational on September 1 where he finished 43rd with a time of 22:10.7.

“I thought Ellis ran well. He improved around 40 seconds from a year ago,” Godfrey said. “Bachman ran a complete race today. It seemed he kept up a good fight throughout the race.”

Sophomore Sam Oxandale and senior Daniel Worthington also finished in the top-20 of the meet, taking 17th and 20th with a times of 19:57.4 and 20:06.7, respectively. Junior Marija Stambolic also finished in the top-20 on the women’s side, taking 12th with a time of 15:27.0.

The Wildcats return to action on September 26 as the team travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma to compete in the Cowboy Jamboree.
