Costamagna, Cirnu Advance to Semifinals

Day One Results

DALLAS, Texas –
Earning wins in singles and as doubles partners, Carolina Costamagna and Livia Cirnu advanced to the semifinals of the SMU Fall Tournament after the first day of action.

Costamagna defeated SMU’s Yana Erkeeva 6-3, 6-3 in the Red Singles draw. Cirnu, participating in the White Singles draw, took down Savannah Durkin of Rice 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Meanwhile, competing together for the first time in doubles, Costamagna and Cirnu defeated Abilene Christian’s Nada Majanovic and Ansley Boarman 6-1 in the White Doubles draw.

Head Coach Danielle Steinberg challenged Costamagna leading up to the tournament to work on competing in matches.

“We have been asking Caro to focus on a specific goal, that relates more to the process and how she competes,” explained Steinberg. “I think she did a great job of that in her singles match today.”

In other doubles action, Iva Bago and Millie Stretton lost a hard-fought match to Vivienne Kulicke and Duda Santos of UTEP 6-4. Despite the loss, coach Steinberg was pleased with the effort of the first-time partners.

“We tried new doubles combinations today and even though Iva and Millie came up short, both teams looked good and are already better than our previous tournament,” Steinberg said. “We will still need to do a better job executing the fundamentals in the big points, but we will get there with practice and more match play.”

Bago, Stretton, and Maria Panaite also competed in singles action for the Wildcats. Bago lost to Louisiana Tech’s Marta Sramkova 7-6, 6-3 in the Blue Singles draw. Stretton was beat by Mia King of TCU 6-1, 7-5 in the Black Singles draw while in the SMU Singles draw, Panaite dropped her match to Taly Merker from Louisiana Tech 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Overall, Steinberg was pleased with her team’s effort as they continued to compete and get better.

“We do not expect to see great results every time we step on the court this fall, but we need to be able to focus on the process and improve little things every time we get out there,” Steinberg explained. “I think most of us were able to do that today.”

The SMU Fall Tournament continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. when Cirnu and Costamagna take on Lois Wagenvoort and Daphne Visscher of UTEP in doubles. Costamagna will then face TCU’s Alexandria Zenovka at 11 a.m. in singles while Cirnu matches up against Sofiko Kadzaya of TCU at noon. Other Wildcat consolation matches will take place throughout the day.
