Cross Country Starts Strong at Bob Timmons Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the year with strong showings on Tuesday night as they raced in the Bob Timmons Classic in Lawrence, Kansas.

The women’s side saw all six of its racers finish in the top 25, while the men finished with four racers in the top 25.

“Our top four that form both the men’s team and the women’s team ran especially well,” second-year head coach Ryun Godfrey said. “I was especially impressed by Emma Wren and Bryan Zack. They experienced some rough patches but they refused to quit.”

Wren, a true freshman, finished 16th in her first race as a Wildcat with a time of 19:34.6, while Zack finished in 17th place with a time of 19:51.5.

Junior Morgan Wedekind posted the best score on the women’s side, finishing in second place with a time of 18:25.1. Sophomore Kayla Doll also finished in the top-10, finishing the race in 18:59.0 for sixth place.

Newcomer Paige Stratioti had a strong showing in her first race, posting a time of 19:24.1 for a 15th place finish.

On the men’s side, sophomore Colton Donahue recorded a top-five finish after posting a time of 19:28.0. Junior Jeff Bachman and freshman Joe Gorthy finished in the top-15, placing 11th (19:42.1) and 13th (19:45.9), respectively.

Despite success in the first meet, Godfrey wants to see improvement as the team progresses towards the Big 12 Championships on October 31.

“We need to close the gap between our fourth and fifth runners on both teams,” Godfrey said. “If we can get back to work over the next month, hopefully that will come together when it counts the most.”

Both teams will be back in action on Friday at the WSU J.K. Gold Classic Duals in Wichita, Kansas. The men are set to race at 8:30 a.m. CST, followed by the women’s race at 9 a.m. CST.
