Doubles Championships Highlight Season’s First Tournament

NORMAN, Okla. – The K-State women’s tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the season at the OU Invite Sunday. The weekend featured two doubles championships from the tandems of Millie Stretton and Ana Garcia Navas as well as Carolina Costamagna and Palma Juhasz.

The Wildcats also picked up numerous singles wins throughout the tournament. Garcia Navas went 2-1 over the weekend, bringing career win total to 17. Fellow sophomore Stetton also picked up a win against a Big 12 foe Malene Stipp of OU to improve her career win total to 21.

Livia Cirnu also came out victorious in her singles match defeating Wichita State’s Marija Mastilovic 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, on Saturday.

In the round robin, Maria Paniate finished with two victories, beating Mary Wright of SMU 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and Ann Pepper of OU 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Her career win total is now up to 29. Also winning in the round robin was Caroline Costamagna, who defeated Sara Jamal of SMU 6-1, 6-1. She also picked up a win over North Texas’ Minying Liang, 6-3, 6-2. With the two wins her total moves to 21.

Seniors Palma Juhasz and Iva Bago each picked up a win to add to K-State’s total. Juhasz defeated Vera Ploner of Tulsa 6-4, 6-0, while Bago also defeated Mastilovic of WSU 6-4, 6-3.

Coach Steinberg was pleased with performances at the OU invite and looks to build off this tournament and make improvements going into the future.

K-State women’s tennis will be back in action next weekend at the SMU Invite October 7-9.
