Four Set For Competition at NACACs

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Four Wildcats will represent three countries in the NACAC (North American-Central-American and Caribbean) Championships beginning Friday, August 7 in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Junior Sonia Gaskin (Barbados), junior Akela Jones (Barbados) and junior Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye (Turks and Caicos) round off K-State’s athlete contingent while Wildcat assistant Greg Watson will serve as an assistant coach (throws) for Team USA.

“The quality of this meet has risen significantly in recent years,” head coach Cliff Rovelto said. “The top end in virtually every event is quite high. They are all athletes that will compete at Worlds (Championships) and there are a number of potential world medalists here.”

Jones is coming off a national championship season, scoring 6,371 points in the heptathlon and recording a meet record in route to the title. She also set multiple personal bests in the 800M, 100H, high jump, shotput and javelin throw. She will run the 100H and 4x4 at the NACAC.

Gaskin will also compete in the 4x4, along with the 800M, for Barbados. The junior finished her 2015 campaign with eight first-place finishes. She set a meet record in the 400M and the 4x400, as well as the school record at the NCAA West Preliminary in the 4x400 with a time of 3:31.20.

Otuonye set personal bests in the 200M and the long jump. He also set the national record in the long jump with a mark of 7.87m/25-10. He will compete in the long jump for Turks and Caicos.

“He (Otuonye) has trained very well this summer and jumped at PR levels in practice this week,” Rovelto said. “He will also be representing Turks and Caicos at the World Championships (August 22-30) in Beijing.”

Watson saw immediate success in his second season with the Wildcats as four athletes earned All-American honors and another seven had scoring performances at the Big 12 Championships.

Former Wildcat Jeffrey Julmis will also compete in the event, running the 110h for Haiti.
